The quickest way to make a simple bar stool is a three legged design: one round seat and three straight legs fixed at a slight outward angle. Getting The Height Right
Measure from the floor to the underside of the counter and subtract 28cm. That is your finished seat height. Subtract the seat thickness, then add roughly 10mm to allow for the leg angle, because an angled leg loses a little vertical height compared with its actual length.
Cut all three legs at once against a stop block. Any difference between them is far more noticeable on a three leg stool, since there is no fourth point to disguise it.
Setting Out The Leg Positions
Mark the centre of the seat, then draw a circle around it with a radius of about 100mm. Divide that circle into three equal parts, which is easiest done by stepping the radius around the circumference and taking every second mark. These three points are your leg centres.
The distance from the centre determines stability. A wider circle spreads the feet further and makes the stool more secure. Keep the legs inside the seat edge so they do not catch shins, but push them as close to the edge as the joint allows.
Drilling The Angle
The legs need to splay outwards by around ten degrees. This is the only slightly demanding part of the build, and there are two straightforward ways to achieve it.
The first is a drilling guide: cut a scrap block at ten degrees, clamp it beside the mark and run the bit against the angled face. The second is to tilt a pillar drill table if you have one. In both cases, the bit must also be rotated so it leans away from the seat centre, not sideways. Mark a line from each leg position to the centre of the seat and keep the drill leaning along that line.
Drill to a depth of about two thirds of the seat thickness. Test the angle in a piece of scrap first, since correcting a badly angled hole in the finished seat is close to impossible.
Fitting The Legs
If you are using dowel, taper the top 40mm slightly with a rasp so it enters the hole snugly rather than tightly. A joint that needs hammering usually splits the seat. Cut a shallow saw kerf across the end of each leg, insert a thin wedge, and drive the leg home with glue: as the leg bottoms out, the wedge spreads the end and locks it in place. Orient the kerf across the grain of the seat, not along it, or the seat will split.
Once the glue has cured, saw the protruding leg tops flush and sand them level with the seat. This is the traditional method and produces a joint that outlasts the person who made it.
If you prefer to avoid wedges, use angled blocks screwed to the underside of the seat and fix the legs into those. The joint is less elegant but perfectly serviceable, and it can be dismantled later.
Trimming The Legs To Sit Flat
Angled legs meet the floor at an angle, so the ends need trimming. Stand the stool on a flat surface, set a pencil on a block of scrap and run it round each leg to scribe a line parallel to the floor. Cut along that line, then fit glides.
Take a little off at a time and recheck. Cutting all three legs slightly long and then adjusting is far safer than cutting to your calculated figure and finding the stool sits low.
Comfort Details
Round the seat edge generously, at least 10mm, and slightly more at the front. On a stool with no back, the edge is in constant contact with the legs and a sharp edge becomes uncomfortable quickly.
A shallow dish scooped into the seat improves comfort noticeably, and can be done with a coarse rasp or an angle grinder fitted with a shaping disc. Even 5mm of hollow in the centre makes a difference across a long sitting.

Finishing
Sand through 120, 180 and 240 grit, breaking every edge. Apply hardwax oil in two thin coats, wiping off any excess before it becomes tacky. On a seat that will see daily use, a third coat on the top surface adds worthwhile protection.
Paint works well on this design too, particularly with the seat left bare and oiled. It is a simple way to make a very plain stool look deliberate.
