Fit a 6mm plywood back, glued and pinned. This is more important in a drawer unit than in a shelved one, because a racked carcass makes runners bind. Do not leave it out.
Add a plinth or adjustable feet. A recessed plinth of around 60mm keeps the base off a cold floor and lets you level the unit, which matters because drawer runners are unforgiving of a twisted carcass.
If the unit is over roughly 90cm wide, add a central vertical divider to stop the top bowing and to give runners a fixing point on both sides.
Fitting the Runners
This is the part that requires care. Choose full extension ball bearing runners rated to at least 25kg. Shoes are not heavy, but full extension is what makes the back of the drawer usable, and cheap partial extension runners leave a third of the drawer inaccessible.
Side mounted runners need a specific clearance, usually 12.5mm each side, so the drawer box must be exactly 25mm narrower than the internal carcass width. Check the manufacturer’s figure, since it varies.
Mark runner heights on both carcass sides using a single measured story stick rather than measuring each one separately. Any discrepancy between left and right causes binding. Keep the runners parallel to the carcass front, and use a square to confirm.

Making the Drawer Boxes
Keep the boxes simple. Four sides of 15mm or 18mm material with a 6mm base captured in a groove, or simply pinned and glued underneath for lighter duty.
Butt joints with glue and screws are perfectly adequate for shoe drawers. If you want a neater result, a rebate on the sides where the front and back meet hides the end grain and adds strength.
Keep drawer sides low at the back and front for easy access, or make the front slightly higher so shoes do not slide out. A front around 2cm taller than the sides is a small refinement that works well.
Line the base with a wipeable material. A thin rubber matting or a removable tray insert catches grit and moisture and can be lifted out and rinsed. This one addition makes a drawer system far more practical for daily footwear.
For the drawer fronts, cut them oversize by nothing and align with 3mm gaps all round. Fit the fronts last, using double sided tape to position them before screwing through from inside the drawer box. This lets you adjust before committing.
Ventilation and Moisture
Drawers are more enclosed than shelves, so moisture management matters. Drill a discreet row of 15mm holes in the drawer base towards the back, or use a slatted base, so air can move.
Do not put wet shoes into a drawer. The two hour airing rule applies even more strictly here than with an open rack. Keep a small tray or open shelf nearby for damp footwear, and only transfer shoes to drawers once dry.
Add a moisture absorber to each drawer. Bicarbonate of soda in an open pot or a silica gel tub works well and takes no space.

Finishing and Hardware
Sand and finish the drawer boxes before fitting them, since access is much easier. Prime MDF edges thoroughly, and use two thin topcoats of eggshell or satin rather than one thick one.
