You make a bar stool with a curved back by shaping the backrest first, either by laminating thin strips of timber around a curved form or by cutting the curve from solid stock, then building a frame of four legs with stretchers and fitting a seat. The curve is the difficult part: everything else is standard stool construction.

Two methods produce a curved back. Bent lamination glues several thin layers around a mould, holding the shape once the glue cures. Cutting from solid removes waste from a thicker board to leave a curved profile. Lamination is stronger and uses less timber. Cutting is faster and needs fewer jigs.

Choosing Your Curve Method

Bent lamination suits a pronounced curve that wraps around the back. You need thin strips, usually 3mm to 5mm thick, a mould in the shape you want, and enough clamps to apply even pressure along the whole length. The layers must be thin enough to bend without cracking, which depends on the species: ash and oak bend well, while pine is less predictable.

Cutting from solid suits a gentle curve. Mark the profile on a thicker board, cut it with a bandsaw or jigsaw, then clean it up with a spokeshave and sanding. The limitation is grain direction. A curve cut across the grain leaves short grain at the extremes of the arc, which is where a back will break under load.

Steam bending is a third option but needs equipment most home workshops lack, and getting consistent results takes practice. For a first stool, lamination or cutting is more reliable.

Timber and Materials

Ash is the traditional choice for bent components because it is strong, flexible and takes glue well. Oak is harder and heavier, and bends acceptably in thin laminations. Beech is stable and widely available. Birch plywood is an honest choice for laminated backs and gives a clean layered edge if you want to show it.

Avoid softwoods for the back and legs. Pine dents easily, splits along the grain, and does not hold joinery under the repeated flexing a backrest receives.

For glue, use a rigid setting adhesive. PVA works for laminations but has some creep under sustained load, so a urea formaldehyde or polyurethane adhesive holds a curve more reliably over years.

Making the Mould and Laminating

Cut the mould from two or three layers of MDF glued together, shaped to the inside curve you want. Remember that the finished piece will spring back slightly when released, so make the mould marginally tighter than the target curve.

Cut your strips slightly oversize in both width and length, so you can trim to final dimensions afterwards. Dry fit them around the mould and add clamps before applying any glue, so you know the clamping arrangement works before the clock starts.

Spread glue on every mating face, stack the strips, and clamp from the centre outwards. Working from the middle pushes excess glue and air towards the ends rather than trapping it. Leave it clamped for the full cure time stated by the adhesive, which is usually longer than the touch dry time.

Once released, trim the ends square and clean the faces. Laminated edges show glue lines, which some people sand back and others treat as a feature.

Building the Frame

A four leg stool at bar height needs legs around 74cm long for a 65cm seat, allowing for the seat thickness. Splay the legs slightly outwards, around five degrees, which improves stability significantly and looks less rigid than perfectly vertical legs.

Join legs to the seat rails with mortise and tenon joints where you have the tools, or with dowels and a good glue line where you do not. Screws alone will loosen under the racking forces a stool experiences.

Add stretchers between the legs, either as a full ring or as an H arrangement. On a bar height stool these are not optional. The greater the leg length, the more leverage a seated person applies, and stretchers are what stop the frame slowly working itself loose. A front stretcher set at a comfortable height also serves as a footrest, which matters more at bar height than counter height.

Fitting the Curved Back

The back attaches to two rear legs that continue above the seat, or to separate uprights fixed to the seat frame. Continuing the rear legs is stronger and simpler, so extend them by 30cm to 40cm above the seat.

Cut shallow housings in the uprights to receive the ends of the curved back. A housing carries load in shear rather than relying on the fixing alone, which is what makes the difference between a back that holds and one that works loose.

Set the back at a slight recline, around 5 to 10 degrees off vertical. A vertical backrest feels upright and unwelcoming. Beyond 15 degrees it starts to push the sitter away from the counter, which defeats the point at a breakfast bar.

Height matters too. A back that meets the sitter in the lumbar region, roughly 20cm to 25cm above the seat, supports more effectively than a tall back that only contacts the shoulder blades.

Seat and Finishing

A solid timber seat can be shaped with a slight dish for comfort, either with a router jig or by hand with a scorp and travisher. Even 10mm of hollow makes a noticeable difference over a flat board.

An upholstered seat is easier for a first project. Cut a plywood base, add high density foam, and staple fabric or faux leather over the top. This also lets you match the stool to existing upholstery in the room, whether that is a set of fabric dining chairs UK sale or a nearby sofa.

For finish, a hardwearing oil or a water based lacquer both work. Kitchens involve moisture and spills, so avoid finishes that mark with water. Apply to the back as well as the front of every component: an unfinished face absorbs moisture unevenly and can cause the curve to move over time.

Is Building Worth It

Building your own stool makes sense if you want an exact height for an unusual counter, if you enjoy the work, or if you need something to match existing joinery. It is a satisfying project and a good introduction to curved work.

It makes less sense if you need four or five matching stools. Repeating a laminated curve consistently five times takes real skill, and the cost of timber, glue, moulds and clamps mounts quickly. Tools You Will Need

The tool list depends on which curve method you choose, but the core requirements are modest.

For bent lamination: a bandsaw or table saw for cutting thin strips, MDF and a jigsaw for the mould, a large number of clamps, and a smoothing plane for cleaning up the finished laminate. The clamps are the item people underestimate. A 40cm curve wants clamping every 8cm to 10cm, which means eight or more on a single piece.

For cutting from solid: a bandsaw or jigsaw for the profile, a spokeshave and a card scraper for refining the curve, and sanding blocks shaped to the arc. Curved surfaces are difficult to sand flat with a flat block, so a shaped backing block improves the result considerably.

For the frame: a mortising chisel or router for joints, a mitre saw for angled leg cuts, and long clamps for glue up. A doweling jig substitutes for mortising equipment if needed.

Getting the Curve Right

Spring back is the detail that catches out first attempts. When a laminated piece is released from the mould, it relaxes slightly and opens out. The amount depends on the timber, the number of glue lines and the adhesive.

The practical response is to make the mould marginally tighter than the finished curve you want. Around five percent tighter is a reasonable starting point for a thin laminate, though it varies. A test piece using offcuts costs an hour and tells you exactly what your particular combination does, which is worth doing before committing good timber.

Glue line thickness matters too. Starved joints, where too little adhesive has been applied, allow more spring back and are weaker. Slight squeeze out along the edges is the sign of adequate coverage.

Keep the strips in the same order and orientation as they were cut from the board. The grain then runs continuously across the finished piece, which both looks better and behaves more predictably.

Sanding and Preparation

Curved work needs more preparation than flat work, because light reveals every irregularity along an arc.

Work through the grits in order rather than jumping ahead, and check progress by running your hand along the curve rather than looking at it. Fingertips detect a flat spot in a curve far more reliably than the eye does.

Sight along the arc against a window at intervals. A gentle sweep of reflected light will break or step where the curve is uneven, which is much easier to see than to measure.

Round over all edges slightly. A sharp arris on a backrest is uncomfortable against a shoulder blade and will also wear through any finish quickly. A 2mm to 3mm radius is enough.
