Deciding The Finished Height First

Everything depends on this figure, so establish it before cutting anything. Measure from the floor to the underside of your worktop and subtract 25cm to 30cm. That is your target seat height.

Now work backwards. Subtract the thickness of your seat blank from the target height, and that is your leg length. If your target seat height is 64cm and the seat is 3cm thick, the legs are 61cm. If the legs will splay outwards, add roughly 1cm to allow for the angle reducing the effective vertical height.

Cut one leg, stand it against the worktop with the seat blank balanced on top and check the figure by eye before cutting the remaining three. It is a two minute check that has saved many projects.

Materials Worth Choosing

For legs and rails, use straight grained hardwood if you can: beech, ash or oak. They take a fixing without splitting and they resist the racking forces a stool experiences every time someone shifts their weight. Softwood works, but choose thicker sections to compensate.

Cutting And Preparing The Parts

Cut all four legs at once if your saw allows, or clamp them together and mark across all four faces so any error is identical on every leg. A stool with three legs at 61cm and one at 60.5cm will rock permanently.

If you want a splay, cut the tops and bottoms of the legs at a small angle, around 5 degrees. The angle at the base means the foot meets the floor flat, and the angle at the top means the seat sits level. Keep the two cuts parallel to each other on each leg.

Cut the seat blank to size. For a square seat, 35cm to 38cm across suits most adults. Round the top edges with sandpaper or a small radius on a router: a hard square edge under the thighs is uncomfortable within minutes and is the most common flaw in a first stool.

Assembling The Frame

Work in pairs. Join two legs with an upper rail and a lower rail to make one side frame, then repeat with the other two legs. Glue every joint and drive screws through the rail into the leg, countersinking the heads so they can be filled later.

Check each side frame for square with a set square before the glue grabs, and clamp it flat on a level surface while it cures. A frame that dries slightly twisted transfers that twist into the finished stool.

Once both sides have cured, join them with the front and back rails using the same method. You now have a rigid box. Test it by pressing firmly on one top corner: any movement means a joint needs tightening or an extra fixing before you go further.

Adding The Footrest

A counter height stool needs a footrest, and it does more than support feet. Positioned around 45cm below the seat, the footrest rails add significant rigidity to the frame.

Set the footrest rails at the front and both sides, or all four sides if you want maximum strength. Leave the back open if the stool will tuck under a counter and you want a clean line. Glue and screw them in the same way as the main rails, and use a scrap block cut to the right length as a spacer so every rail sits at an identical height.

Fitting The Seat

Attach the seat from underneath so no fixings show on the top surface. Two reliable methods:

  1. Screw upwards through the top rails into the seat, using screws short enough not to break through.
  2. Fit small timber blocks in each internal corner, then screw up through the blocks into the seat and sideways into the rails.

Solid timber seats move slightly with humidity, so leave the fixings snug rather than brutally tight and avoid gluing the seat down across its full width. Allowing that small amount of movement prevents splits appearing along the grain over the years.

Finishing

Sand progressively, finishing at around 180 or 240 grit, and pay particular attention to the seat edges and the footrest, since those are the surfaces people touch. Wipe off all dust before applying a finish.

Hardwax oil is a good choice for a kitchen stool: it is easy to apply, feels natural underfoot and can be patched locally when it wears. Two coats on the frame and three on the seat is a sensible schedule. Water based lacquer gives a harder, more wipeable surface if the stool will be used by children.

Leave the stool to cure fully before use. Oil finishes feel dry long before they have hardened, and early use marks the surface.

Making It More Comfortable

A timber seat is fine for short sittings and hard work over a long breakfast. Two improvements make a noticeable difference.

The first is a dished seat. Removing a shallow scoop from the seat with a coarse sanding disc, no more than 8mm deep at the centre, transforms comfort for very little effort.

The second is a cushion. A simple square or round pad with a grip backing sits neatly on a flat seat and lifts off for washing.
