A bathroom is not made comfortable by one bright ceiling light. It is made comfortable by three separate jobs of lighting done properly: an even general wash for safety and cleaning, a shadow free light at the mirror for shaving and make up, and a low level light for early mornings and late nights. Most of the uncomfortable bathrooms we see fail because a single ceiling fitting is being asked to do all three at once.

There is no national register of measured light levels in British bathrooms, and we have not measured a panel of homes ourselves, so we will not put a lux figure on the average UK bathroom. What can be stated with confidence is how bathroom lighting should be organised, where fittings need to sit in relation to the bath and shower, and which protection ratings apply in each zone. The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers publishes recommended illuminance levels for domestic rooms in its lighting guidance, and the wiring safety zones described below follow BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations.

Why one ceiling light never feels right

The standard British bathroom is small, hard surfaced and often internal or served by a single small window. Fit one central light and the room becomes flat: every surface receives roughly the same amount of light, so nothing has depth, and anyone standing at the basin has the light source behind their head. Shadow falls exactly where it is least wanted.

Layering solves this without adding brightness for its own sake. Ambient light sets the base level and is best spread across the ceiling rather than concentrated in the middle. Task light belongs at the mirror and should sit at roughly face height on both sides, which is why illuminated mirrors and vertical wall fittings outperform a single overhead spot. A third low level layer, whether a dimmed circuit, a plinth light under the vanity or a small wall light, keeps the room usable at night without waking the household. Zones, ratings and where fittings can legally go

Bathroom lighting is one of the few areas of home decoration governed by electrical safety rules rather than taste. BS 7671 sets out zones measured from the bath and shower. Zone 0 is inside the bath or shower tray itself. Zone 1 sits above it to a defined height. Zone 2 extends outward from the edge of Zone 1 and around a basin. Each zone carries a minimum ingress protection rating, and fittings intended for a living room ceiling are rarely suitable.

The practical consequence for anyone planning a refit is that fitting positions should be decided before tiling, not after. Moving a wall light 20cm once the wall is finished is disproportionately expensive. It is also worth remembering that the extract fan is part of the lighting plan in most British installations, because it is commonly wired to the light switch, and that a fan running every time the light comes on will influence how willing the household is to use the low level layer at night.

Surfaces do half the work

Two bathrooms with identical fittings can feel entirely different because of what the light lands on. A room in pale gloss tiles with a large mirror and white sanitaryware recycles light around the space. The same room in matt charcoal porcelain absorbs it. This is the single most useful thing to understand before buying brighter lamps: if a bathroom feels dim, the finish is often the cause rather than the fitting.

Mirrors are the most effective and least expensive amplifier available. A mirror opposite or adjacent to the window doubles the apparent daylight in a small room, and a wide mirror above the basin spreads task light across the face rather than concentrating it. We see this work particularly well in narrow internal bathrooms, where a full width mirror over the vanity changes the sense of the room more than any change of lamp. Planning light around the furniture, not after it

Lighting failures in bathrooms are usually furniture failures in disguise. A tall storage unit placed beside the basin blocks the wall light position. A mirrored cabinet door swings into the beam of a downlight. A wall hung vanity with an underside recess can carry a discreet strip that lights the floor at night, but only if the plan allows for it early.

We advise treating the vanity wall as a single composition: unit, basin, mirror and light sources considered together, with the mirror centred on the basin rather than on the wall if the two do not align. Where a room has to hold a family’s storage, the wall opposite the bath is usually the better home for a tall unit, keeping the basin wall clear for light. What this means for UK homes

Start by asking what the room is used for and at what hours, then build the layers to suit. For a family bathroom, prioritise even ambient light and a properly lit mirror, and accept that accent lighting is a luxury rather than a requirement. For an en suite used mainly at the beginning and end of the day, the low level layer earns its place quickly.

Keep colour temperature consistent across every source in the room. A warm mirror light beside a cool ceiling light makes skin look uneven and no amount of extra output fixes it. Choose dimmable fittings where the room serves both grooming and bathing, and put the mirror light on its own switch so it is not forced on at night. Finally, plan fitting positions on the same drawing as the vanity, mirror and storage. The most common remedy we recommend is not a brighter lamp but a mirror in a better place and a second light source at face height.

How many downlights does a small bathroom need?

Fewer than most people install. In a compact bathroom, two or three well placed ceiling fittings plus a dedicated mirror light usually produce a better result than a grid of spots, because the mirror light does the work that shadows would otherwise ruin. Spacing matters more than count: keep fittings away from the exact centre of the ceiling and out of the path of shower screens and cabinet doors.

Should bathroom lighting be warm white or cool white?

Choose one and apply it consistently. Warmer light flatters skin and suits a room used for bathing and relaxing. Cooler light gives crisper definition at the mirror and suits detailed grooming. The error to avoid is mixing the two in a small room, where the difference is obvious on tile and on skin.

Can I put a light above the bath?

Only if it carries the ingress protection rating required for that zone under BS 7671, and it should be installed by a competent electrician. The zones are measured from the bath and shower, so the same fitting can be acceptable on one wall and unacceptable on another.

Does a bigger mirror really make a bathroom brighter?

It makes it feel brighter, which is usually what people mean. A mirror positioned to reflect a window or a wall light effectively doubles that source visually and spreads task light across the face. In narrow bathrooms this is often the most effective single change available.
