Two British winters change garden furniture in predictable ways, and the changes are not evenly distributed across materials. Timber shifts colour and moves with moisture. Metal is decided entirely by its coating. Synthetic rattan is decided by the frame hidden inside it. Plastic is decided by ultraviolet exposure. Knowing which failure belongs to which material is the whole of the buying decision.

We have not run a controlled exposure trial and no published UK testing programme compares these materials over a fixed period, so no scores, percentages or survival rates appear here. This is a qualitative account of how each material behaves through British conditions, which are wet more than they are cold, and where the damage comes from repeated wetting and drying rather than from frost alone.

Timber: teak, hardwood and softwood

Teak contains natural oils that resist water penetration, which is why it has been used outdoors for so long. Left untreated, the surface oxidises and turns silver grey within the first season or two. This is a surface change. The timber beneath is unaffected, and the piece can be brought back to a honey tone with a proprietary cleaner and restorer if the colour matters to the owner.

What does affect teak is movement. Timber expands and contracts with moisture content, and in Britain that cycle runs all year rather than seasonally. Small surface cracks along the grain, known as checking, are normal and do not compromise the joint. Fixings can loosen over two seasons, and a single check of the bolts each spring prevents the wobble that people mistake for structural failure.

Other hardwoods behave similarly but with less natural oil, so they benefit more from treatment. Softwood garden furniture, usually pressure treated pine, is a different proposition: the treatment protects against rot but not against movement or surface degradation, and these pieces need recoating to keep their appearance. Softwood left in permanent contact with wet ground will fail at the feet first, which is why placing any timber furniture on paving rather than on soil or grass extends its life considerably.

Metal: aluminium, steel and iron

Aluminium is the material that most reliably survives British weather with the least attention. It forms a stable oxide layer, it does not rust, and a powder coated finish over it resists chipping. It is also light, which is an advantage for storage and a disadvantage in wind, since lightweight chairs move in a gale and end up damaged against a wall or a fence.

Steel is stronger and heavier, and it is entirely dependent on its coating. Galvanised and powder coated steel performs well until the coating is breached. Once it is, water reaches the steel and corrosion spreads underneath the coating from that point outwards. The common breach points are the feet, where chairs are dragged across paving, and the fixing points where bolts pass through. Touching up a chip when it appears is a genuinely effective intervention.

Cast iron is durable and immovable, which suits a permanent bench position. It rusts at the surface readily and is usually painted, and the maintenance cycle is repainting rather than protecting.

Synthetic rattan and plastics

Synthetic rattan is a woven polyethylene strand over a frame. The weave itself is generally stable and ultraviolet stabilised in decent quality products, and it sheds water rather than absorbing it. The failure point is almost always the frame beneath. An aluminium frame will outlast the weave. A powder coated steel frame will perform well until the coating is broken, and then it will corrode from the inside where it cannot be seen or treated. A plain uncoated steel frame in a cheap set is the reason so many rattan sofas sag after two seasons while the weave still looks new.

The other weakness is the strand ends and the points where the weave is fixed to the frame. Repeated flexing under weight works these loose, and once a strand unravels the repair is difficult.

Moulded plastic furniture is defined by ultraviolet exposure. Polypropylene and similar plastics lose plasticisers under sunlight, and the surface develops a chalky bloom. The material becomes progressively more brittle, and the failure appears at the stress concentrations, typically where the leg meets the seat. A stacked set stored out of the light will remain serviceable far longer than the same set left on a terrace all year.
