Furniture that cannot be delivered into the room it was bought for is one of the most avoidable failures in UK retail, and the cause is almost always the same. The buyer measured the room and not the route. A sofa that fits comfortably in a reception room can still be defeated by a 76cm doorway, a half landing or a lift car that is 20cm too shallow.

The turn, not the door, is the problem

A doorway is a two dimensional restriction and people plan for it as such. What actually defeats a delivery is the sequence: through a front door, along a narrow hall, then a ninety degree turn into a reception room. Where the lift defeats the item, the stairs become the fallback, and in a block that means multiple flights with landings at every level and often a tight communal corridor at the end. Which pieces fail and which do not

Rigid frame sofas are the single largest source of difficulty. The frame cannot be reduced, the depth is fixed and the arms add width that cannot be removed. Where the feet unscrew and the back is bolted rather than fixed, the situation improves considerably, and it is worth asking whether the back detaches before assuming it does not.

Large rigid wardrobes are next, because their height becomes a width once they are laid flat to go round a turn. Flat pack construction eliminates the problem completely.
