In family homes the footstool is not a piece of occasional furniture. It is a seat, a step, a table, a toy and a landing pad, and it is treated accordingly. No national dataset records how long British households keep a footstool or what causes them to replace one, and we have not commissioned survey fieldwork of our own. What follows is a durability assessment: an examination of where footstools actually wear, what the recognised textile and construction standards tell us about resistance, and how the loads applied in a family living room differ from the loads the product was designed for. The short conclusion is that footstools sold as light accessories rarely survive family use, while those built with a timber frame, webbed or sprung platform and a heavy domestic grade cover last as long as the sofa.

The pattern is clear enough to act on. Anything with a loose weave or a long pile is a poor match for a footstool in a house with children or pets, because the footstool is the lowest and most accessible upholstered surface in the room.
