Downlight Spacing Standards UK: Reference Data by Room Size & Beam Angle

Downlight spacing is not a style decision, it is a geometry problem with one variable that most households never check: beam angle. A narrow beam fitting at 24 degrees and a wide beam fitting at 60 degrees produce completely different results from the same ceiling grid, and the majority of poorly lit new kitchens we see are the result of a spacing rule applied without reference to the optic.

The workable principle is straightforward. Get that relationship right and a room lights evenly. Get it wrong and you produce either scalloped shadows or a ceiling that looks like an airport runway.

This is why the common advice to space fittings at half the ceiling height works reasonably well as an opening position and fails as a rule. At 2.4m it produces 1.2m spacing, which suits a mid range beam angle in a general living space. Apply the same 1.2m to a narrow beam accent fitting and the floor will show distinct pools with gaps between them. Apply it to a very wide beam in a small bathroom and the room will be flatly over lit.

The more reliable method is to work backwards from the surface that matters. Decide the height at which light is needed, establish how wide each fitting will cover at that height, then space so the coverage circles touch or slightly overlap. In a kitchen the relevant height is the worktop. In a hallway it is the floor. In a living room it is somewhere in between, which is one reason living rooms rarely benefit from downlights used alone.

Kitchens: the shadow problem nobody plans for

The most common downlight error in UK homes is a symmetrical grid centred on the room. It looks correct on a plan and performs badly in use, because the person at the worktop stands between the fitting and the surface they are working on. The result is a shadow exactly where the knife is.

The fix is positional rather than numerical.
