Why there are no prices here
The title asks about cost, and the honest response is to separate two questions. What furniture costs to buy is a commercial matter that changes weekly and that we are not going to characterise nationally. What furniture costs to live with is a design question with durable answers, and that is the subject we can address properly.
Framed that way, the useful findings survive. A bookcase bought at any level performs badly if its shelves are too long for the load, and performs well if they are not. That relationship holds regardless of what anything costs, and it is the part a reader can act on when standing in front of a specification.
Span is what actually fails
Deflection in a loaded shelf increases sharply with length. Doubling the span of a shelf does not double the sag: it increases it by a great deal more, which is why a 60 cm shelf and a 120 cm shelf made from identical board behave so differently under the same books per metre.
Books make this worse than most loads because they are dense and uniform.
