Once a chimney breast, a door swing and a radiator have taken their share, the usable run of uninterrupted wall in a typical terraced reception room or flat is frequently under two metres. Our analysis concludes that low, wide and shallow units outperform tall or bulky ones in compact spaces: a depth of 30cm to 40cm preserves a walkable route, a low silhouette keeps sight lines open, and raised legs that reveal continuous floor make the room read as larger.
