We should deal with the title honestly before anything else. We have not surveyed a thousand households, and this report contains no survey results. We do not commission fieldwork, and publishing percentages from a study that was never carried out would be worthless to the journalists and readers this analysis is written for. What follows is our editorial assessment as a UK furniture retailer of a problem we see constantly and can describe precisely.

The problem itself is simple to state. Media wiring in British living rooms has grown faster than the furniture designed to hold it. A television used to be one plug and one aerial lead. A modern setup adds a soundbar, a streaming device, a games console, a router, a subwoofer and a charging point or two, and that collection is routinely asked to hide behind a slim unit that was designed when three cables was a lot. The result is not a tidiness failure on the part of households. It is a specification mismatch.

Why the wiring outgrew the furniture

Two changes happened at once. Televisions became thinner and lighter, which allowed media units to become lower and shallower, and in many homes allowed the screen to leave the unit altogether and go on the wall. At the same time the number of connected devices around a television multiplied.

The furniture followed the screen rather than the devices. A 30cm deep unit looks right beneath a slim wall mounted television and is a genuinely awkward home for a games console, an amplifier and a coiled length of spare HDMI cable. Depth, once lost, is difficult to recover, because in a British living room of typical size every centimetre of depth taken by the media wall is a centimetre removed from the walking route or the sofa distance.

Power is the other constraint. Older British homes frequently have fewer socket outlets than current use requires, and a single double socket behind a media wall is a common finding. Everything downstream of that, the extension lead, the multi way adaptor, the tangle at skirting level, follows from the socket count rather than from any decision the household made about tidiness.

The dimensions that actually solve it

Cable management is a measurement problem before it is a product problem. The table below sets out the clearances that make wiring manageable, drawn from standard furniture dimensions and common British construction rather than from any survey.

The aperture size is the one that catches people out most often. Many media units have a neat round cable port that a bare cable passes through easily and an assembled plug does not, which forces the whole installation to be done in the wrong order or the cable to be routed around the outside.

Wall mounted screens and the vertical run

A wall mounted television is the arrangement most households want and the one that creates the hardest wiring problem, because the cables have to get from the screen down to the devices without crossing open wall.

There are three honest solutions. The cleanest is to run the cables inside the wall, which in a plasterboard partition is straightforward for a competent installer and in solid masonry means chasing. Mains cable concealed within a wall is work that should follow the electrical safety requirements set out in the Building Regulations for England, covered by Part P for electrical safety in dwellings, and it is properly a job for a qualified electrician rather than a weekend task.

The second is surface trunking painted to match the wall, which is visually acceptable, quick and entirely reversible. This is the right answer in rented property where fixings and chasing are not permitted.

The third is to abandon the wall mount and put the screen back on the unit, which hides every cable behind the furniture with no building work at all. Heat, access and the hidden cost of sealing everything in

The instinct with cables is to shut them away completely, and taken too far it causes two problems.

The first is heat. Routers, consoles, amplifiers and streaming boxes all generate it, and an enclosed compartment with no rear aperture and no ventilation gap will run hot. Check the cable apertures physically. Look for openings large enough to pass an assembled plug, and prefer several small openings distributed across the back to one central hole, because it shortens every run.

Leave the equipment breathing. Five centimetres of clear space above anything that gets warm, and an open back rather than a sealed one.
