Some time a style of furniture  becomes all the rage. The trend lasts a few years or a couple of decades, and then some new style takes its place. In the 1940s, intrepid designers introduced entire lines of furniture, as well as architectural and mechanical design that featured dynamic lines, minimal decoration and made a bold, artistic statement. It was called “art-decorator” or “art deco”. You’ll recognize buildings, cars and other items made in this style because of their distinctive look. Art deco furnishings were all the rage in the 40s, and guess what? They’re back in vogue! Before you start redecorating, here are some facts to keep in mind.

Whether you are a purist and prefer vintage pieces or you don’t mind a well-made reproduction, this is a style of furniture that works well in almost any type of home. Period houses can showcase a collection  of great art deco furnishings or collectibles with great finesse. Still, with the right touches, your home or apartment can probably show them off just as well. A great feature of the art deco furniture line up is its ability to adapt and blend with other styles. Because the lines were sleek and bold, but simple, the look can easily sit beside a frilly, Victorian piece or a bleak, raw contemporary item and still not clash.

Most good art deco items are made from raw woods and metals. Some feature hard plastic. In the days of the original pieces, plastic was a highly prized modern material. Now, we equate it with cheapness. When you are shopping for vintage deco, don’t let the plastic put you off. It might actually make the item more valuable.

So, go for the high style and good clean lines of a great deco look in your home. Whether you buy the whole package or just a few accessorizing pieces, you’ll be showing off your good taste.
