We need to open with a correction to the expectation the title sets. Why stated capacity figures are hard to compare

When a bench lists a maximum user weight, that figure is meaningful only alongside the method used to produce it, and methods vary. Depth, width and the British hallway

Strength is only half the question. A shoe bench that is structurally excellent and 45cm deep is a poor purchase for a Victorian terrace hallway, because it will make the corridor impassable for two people.
