The radiogram era: furniture first, electronics inside

The radiogram was a piece of furniture that happened to contain electronics. Valve amplification ran hot and required space. A single full range loudspeaker needed an enclosure with real internal volume to produce bass. That form dictated a listening habit. The radiogram was communal, sat against a wall, and produced a single point of sound for the whole room. There was no question of positioning, because the furniture and the sound source were the same object.

Stereo ended that arrangement. Once two channels needed physical separation, a single cabinet could no longer hold the entire system, and the loudspeakers left the furniture to stand on their own. Separates, shelving and the ventilation problem

Through the 1960s and 1970s the system fragmented further. A turntable, a tuner, an amplifier and later a cassette deck each arrived as an independent box, each generating heat, each needing to be reached. Enclosed cabinetry became actively unhelpful. The flat panel interruption and what it removed

Flat panel television changed the furniture faster than any previous shift. Depth collapsed, weight moved to the wall in many homes, and the cabinet became a long low plane beneath a screen. Audio equipment, by then often reduced to a single streaming box or a soundbar, no longer justified dedicated furniture. Plan cable routes before you place the unit. Leave 8cm to 10cm between the back of the cabinet and the wall for connectors and bend radius, and use the rear cutouts rather than trapping cables against skirting.
