The four costs inside every piece of furniture
Strip any piece of furniture back and the price reflects four pressures in different proportions.
Raw material is the most visible. Timber, engineered board, glass, steel, aluminium, stone, foam, textile and leather all trade in their own markets and respond to their own conditions: forestry supply and construction demand for timber, industrial energy for glass and metal, agricultural and petrochemical inputs for foam and fabric.
Manufacturing energy is less visible and often larger than expected. Float glass is made in a furnace that runs continuously. Tempering glass requires reheating it. High gloss lacquer is cured. What changed structurally over the past decade
Without quoting figures, several structural shifts over this period are matters of record rather than estimation and are worth naming, because they explain why furniture prices did not behave uniformly.
Container shipping conditions became volatile in a way they had not been for many years, and the effect fell hardest on the bulkiest goods. Categories that ship as air inside a box absorbed more of that pressure than dense ones.
