Glazing choice decides two things that framing cannot fix later: how much of the artwork you can actually see, and how quickly it fades. Standard float glass is clear, heavy and reflective. Acrylic is lighter and shatter resistant but scratches readily. Museum grade glass carries an optical coating that suppresses reflection and a filter that blocks a large part of the ultraviolet spectrum.

The mistake worth avoiding is treating glare and UV as one problem. They are separate properties with separate solutions, and plenty of anti reflective glazing offers no meaningful UV protection while plenty of UV filtering glazing reflects the room straight back at you. Read them as two specifications, because that is what they are.

Glare is a geometry problem before it is a materials problem

A reflection appears when a light source and your eye sit at matching angles either side of the glass surface. Change either angle and the reflection moves. Standard float glass reflects a portion of incident light at each surface, and there are two surfaces, front and back. That is the reflection you see. Anti reflective coatings work by adding thin optical layers that cause reflected light waves to cancel each other, which reduces the visible reflection rather than scattering it. The image behind stays sharp.

Etched non glare glass takes the opposite approach. Its surface is microscopically roughened so light scatters in many directions instead of bouncing back as a coherent image. It genuinely removes the mirror effect, but it scatters the light passing through too, which softens detail and mutes colour. Mounted directly against a print the effect is mild. Held away by a deep mount or a box frame it becomes obvious.

The cheapest intervention remains placement. A frame hung on a wall perpendicular to the window rather than opposite it will show almost no reflection at all, and it costs nothing. What ultraviolet filtering does and does not do

Ultraviolet light is the most energetic part of the spectrum reaching a framed work, and it drives fading, paper yellowing and the breakdown of organic pigments. UV filtering glazing incorporates a coating or an interlayer that absorbs a large share of it before it reaches the artwork.

What filtering does not do is stop fading. Visible light also carries enough energy to degrade many pigments, particularly the dyes used in inkjet prints and the organic pigments in watercolours. There is also a practical point about what deserves protection. A mass produced print has no irreplaceable value, and conservation glazing on it is money that would be better spent on the frame or on a larger piece. Reserve the upgrade for originals, limited editions, photographs and anything with personal significance. Weight, safety and where acrylic wins outright

Acrylic is considerably less dense than glass, so a sheet of the same size and thickness weighs far less. In a large frame that difference changes everything downstream: the moulding can be lighter, the fixings carry less load, and one person can hang a piece that would otherwise need two.

Safety is the other decisive factor. Acrylic does not break into sharp shards. Its weaknesses are specific and predictable. It scratches easily, and it must be cleaned with a soft cloth and a cleaner formulated for plastics, never with an ammonia based glass spray, which will craze the surface. And it holds a static charge, which is why conservation framers avoid it over charcoal, pastel, chalk and any loose medium: the static can lift particles off the artwork and deposit them on the inside of the glazing.

What this means for UK homes

Choose the glazing after choosing the wall. Establish where the light comes from at different times of day, then decide. A wall running perpendicular to the main window removes most glare without any upgrade, and a wall out of direct sun removes most of the fading risk. Match the specification to the work. Standard glass is entirely adequate for reproductions and posters. UV filtering earns its place for anything on paper that you intend to keep. Get the hanging height right, because the finest glazing cannot rescue a badly placed picture.
