Why the joint is where stools die

A dining chair has a back, and the back means the sitter’s weight is distributed rearward into a structure braced in two directions. A stool has neither. Height matching and why it affects durability

An incorrectly matched stool is a stool that gets abused. If the seat is too high for the counter, the sitter’s knees press against the underside and they push back with their legs, applying leverage to the frame with every adjustment. If it is too low, they perch forward on the front edge of the seat, concentrating load at the point furthest from the frame’s centre.
