The physics of a sagging shelf

A loaded shelf is a simple beam, and its deflection rises steeply as the span increases. Fixings, wall types and UK housing reality

Tall shelving is a stability question as much as a durability one. A slim tall unit loaded unevenly, with weight high and little at the base, has a modest resistance to tipping, and that resistance falls further on a thick carpet where the front feet sink. Securing the top of the unit to the wall removes the problem completely, and it also improves durability, because a unit that cannot rack or twist keeps its joints tight.
