The footprint problem

Standard UK mattress sizes are fixed and useful: single 90 x 190 cm, small double 120 x 190 cm, double 135 x 190 cm, king 150 x 200 cm and super king 180 x 200 cm. An upholstered frame surrounds those figures. Side rails carry a structure plus foam plus fabric, so the face of a padded rail stands 7 cm to 15 cm outside the mattress edge on each side. A padded headboard adds its own thickness, and on a tall design leaning back the projection at floor level is greater than it appears in a photograph.

Then add what the room needs to function. We allow around 60 cm of walkway down at least one long side and at the foot, and 75 cm in front of any wardrobe so the doors open and someone can stand in them. Getting the headboard up the stairs

This is the most avoidable disappointment in the category. Side rails and slat sets are manageable, but a one piece upholstered headboard for a king bed can be well over 150 cm wide and 120 cm tall, and it is rigid. Four measurements decide whether it arrives: the clear opening of every door it must pass, the landing width at the top of the stairs, the diagonal on any turn, and the headroom over the flight.

An end lift frame swings the mattress upward through an arc, needing headroom clear of a sloping ceiling and nothing on the floor at the foot. A side opening frame needs that walkway clear. In a room at minimum width the opening side must be the side with greater clearance, and that must be decided before delivery because the mechanism is handed.

Weight is the other factor. A gas lift base holding bedding is heavy to raise, and struts lose assistance over years.
