What British households want from a media storage unit has separated into two distinct requirements, and most units are still designed for only one of them. The first is concealment: hiding a growing collection of boxes, consoles, cables and controllers. The second is display: showing a smaller curated collection of records, books and objects. Very few rooms want only one.

The units that satisfy are the ones that do both in defined proportions, with closed storage sized to actual equipment and open storage sized to what people genuinely want on show. The units that disappoint are the ones that guessed the ratio.

The two collections problem

On the other side there is media and display: records, books, framed photographs, a speaker that is meant to be seen. This wants to be open, well proportioned and at a height where it can be looked at rather than looked down on.

Designing one piece of furniture for both is genuinely difficult, and the compromise most units make is uniform compartments. Uniform compartments suit neither collection: too shallow for records, too tall for a games console, too open for cables and too closed for display.

The better arrangement is asymmetric. Closed cupboards sized to equipment on one side, open shelving sized to the specific media being stored on the other. Media formats have fixed sizes, and this is one area where furniture can be specified precisely rather than approximately. Height, and why low units have won

Tall media units were designed around televisions that were deep and small. A modern flat panel is wide and thin, and it sits best on a low surface where the centre of the screen falls near seated eye level. For most sofas that means the surface should be between 45cm and 60cm high.

This has changed the shape of the furniture. The dominant format is now a long low unit, often wider than the television it carries, which gives horizontal storage across its length and a clean line under the screen. The exception is a room where floor area is at an absolute premium, where a tall unit stacks storage vertically and accepts a higher screen position. In open plan spaces a low unit has an additional advantage: it does not obstruct sightlines across the room.
