To make a large dining room table you glue several boards edge to edge into a wide top, flatten and finish that panel, then build a base with rails and legs strong enough to carry the span without sagging. Everything else is careful measuring and patience.
Set the Dimensions Before You Buy Any Timber
Large tables fail more often on proportion than on joinery. Work out the finished size from the room, not from the timber you happen to find.
- Allow sixty centimetres of edge per person, and sixty five if the chairs have arms.
- A top of two hundred by one hundred centimetres seats eight generously.
- Two hundred and forty by one hundred seats ten.
- Keep the width between ninety and one hundred and ten centimetres so people can reach across.
- Finished height should be seventy five centimetres, including the top thickness.
Then check the room. You need around seventy five centimetres behind each chair for people to sit down, and a metre where somebody has to walk past a seated diner. In many UK dining rooms, a table longer than two hundred centimetres leaves no comfortable route around the ends, so a bench along one side can be the difference between a workable layout and a permanent squeeze.
Choosing Timber for a Wide Top
European oak and ash are the usual choices in the UK because they are stable, widely available and take a hardwearing finish. Beech is cheaper and fine for a painted base but moves more than oak in a heated room. Walnut is beautiful and expensive, and it suits a table that will be the only strong material in a pale room.
Buy kiln dried stock at a moisture content of around eight to ten per cent and let it sit in the room where the table will live for at least two weeks before you cut anything. Timber that acclimatises before machining is timber that stays flat afterwards.
Aim for boards between twenty six and forty millimetres thick. Anything thinner will look weak at this scale and will need more support underneath.
Glueing Up the Panel
This is the stage that defines the table. Lay the boards out and shuffle them until the grain looks natural across the width, alternating the growth rings where you can to balance any future cupping.
- Joint one edge of each board so it is straight and square. A jointer, a hand plane and a straight edge, or a router and a guide rail will all do it.
- Dry fit the whole panel in the clamps and check for gaps by holding it up to the light. Fix any gaps now.
- Apply PVA to both mating edges, clamp with sash clamps alternating above and below the panel to keep it flat, and add cauls across the width at each end.
- Wipe the squeeze out with a damp cloth before it skins over.
- Leave it clamped overnight and let it rest for another day before flattening.
Biscuits or dominoes help with alignment but they add no meaningful strength: a properly prepared edge joint in PVA is stronger than the surrounding timber.
Flattening a Panel That Is Too Wide for a Machine
Very few home workshops have a planer wide enough for a metre wide panel, so use one of these approaches instead. A router sled, which is a straight rail arrangement that carries a router across the surface in passes, gives excellent results and only needs care in setting it level. A hand plane worked diagonally across the grain and then along it is slower but quieter and surprisingly quick once you get a rhythm. A local joinery workshop will often run a panel through a wide belt sander for a modest fee, which is the least romantic and most efficient option.
Finish with progressive sanding to one hundred and eighty or two hundred and twenty grit. Going finer than that closes the grain and can leave an oil finish looking patchy.
Building the Base
A large top needs a frame that resists both the weight and the sideways shove of people leaning on it. Two structures work well.
A rail and leg frame uses four legs joined by aprons around the perimeter, ideally with mortise and tenon joints. Keep the aprons at least eighty millimetres deep, and set them in from the edge so knees clear them. For tables over two hundred and twenty centimetres, add a central rail beneath the top to prevent long term sag.
A trestle base uses two end frames joined by a stretcher along the centre line. It leaves the ends free for seating and it feels lighter in a room. The stretcher joint carries all the racking load, so use a through tenon with a wedge or a substantial bolted connection.
Whichever you choose, keep the legs at least twenty centimetres inboard from the ends so nobody sits astride one, and fit adjustable feet for the uneven floors common in older properties.
Fixing the Top So It Can Move
A metre wide oak top can change width by five millimetres or more between a damp spring and a dry, centrally heated winter. Screwing it rigidly to the frame guarantees a split.
Use buttons or figure of eight fasteners instead. Timber buttons sit in a groove cut on the inside of each apron and screw up into the top, holding it down firmly while allowing it to slide across the frame. Fix the centre of each end tightly and let the movement work outwards from there.
Finishing
Hardwax oil is the most practical finish for a dining table. It sits in the timber rather than on it, feels natural under the hand, and any damage can be spot repaired without stripping the whole surface. Apply thin coats, buff off the excess, and allow proper curing time between them.
Polyurethane lacquer gives a tougher film and better resistance to red wine, but when it does eventually scratch, the repair means sanding back a whole area. Choose oil if you want a table you can maintain yourself for decades.
Planning the Build Around Curing Times
The work itself is not what makes a large table take several weekends. Waiting does. Glue needs a full day in the clamps and another before machining. Oil finishes need overnight between coats and a week before the surface is properly hardened. Timber needs a fortnight in the room before any of that begins.
Sequence the project so something useful happens while you wait. Prepare the base timber during the panel acclimatisation period, cut the joints while the panel glue cures, and finish the base while the top is being sanded. Working this way turns a month of scattered evenings into three productive weekends.
Plan the assembly location too. A two metre panel is difficult to turn over alone and impossible to carry up a narrow staircase once the base is fitted. Where the workshop is not the dining room, assemble the base in the room and bring the top up separately, on edge.
Should You Make One or Buy One?
Making a large table is one of the more satisfying pieces of home woodwork, and it lets you match an unusual room shape exactly. It also needs clamps, workshop space and roughly three weekends once the glue and finish curing times are counted.
