An adjustable bar stool comes apart in four stages: unbolt the seat from the lift plate, ease the gas cylinder out of the base, release the footrest ring, then split the base if it is a multi part design. Stage One: The Seat

Undo the four screws and put them in the pot. Lift the seat clear. If the swivel mechanism stays attached to the seat, leave it there rather than dismantling it further, since swivel plates rarely need to come apart and are fiddly to reassemble.
Seized screws respond to penetrating oil and a few minutes of waiting. Press hard into the head while turning so the cross does not strip. If a head does strip, a rubber band laid over it can give a driver enough grip to bite.
Stage Two: The Gas Cylinder
The cylinder sits in a tapered socket in the base. Weight applied through years of use wedges it tighter, which is why it can feel welded in place.
Keep the stool inverted. Hold the base down and pull the cylinder upwards, straight along its axis. On a newer stool it often slides free.
If it resists, tap the base housing with a rubber mallet in the direction that drives the cylinder out. Move around the joint between taps so the force is even, and use repeated moderate strikes rather than one hard blow. The aim is vibration, not impact.
Penetrating oil run into the joint and left for twenty minutes makes a real difference on corroded stools. Reapply and wait again rather than escalating the force.
Where it still will not shift, grip the cylinder body with a pipe wrench and twist while pulling upward. The twisting motion breaks the friction bond even though the joint is not threaded. Wrap the chrome in cloth if you plan to reuse the part, since wrench jaws leave marks.
Two absolute rules apply. Never heat a gas cylinder and never cut, drill or puncture one. The strut is sealed and pressurised, and breaching the casing is dangerous. A cylinder that genuinely will not come out is a reason to replace the stool, not a reason to reach for a hacksaw.
Stage Three: The Footrest
Footrest rings attach in one of three ways. Some clamp around the cylinder housing with a single bolt, some bolt to the legs at two or more points, and some are welded to the frame.
For clamped and bolted types, loosen the fixings with a hex key or spanner and slide the ring off. Keep the bolts with the rest of the fixings.
Welded rings do not come off and do not need to. They pack fine as part of the base assembly.
Check whether the footrest has plastic caps or covers at the joints. These pull off easily and go missing just as easily, so bag them.
Stage Four: The Base
A single weighted disc base needs nothing more. Bolted four leg bases separate with a hex key into flat pieces that stack neatly.
Unscrew any adjustable feet, glides or floor protectors that project below the base, since they bend if the base is stood on end during a move.
Give the base a wipe while it is apart. The underside and the inside of the cylinder socket are the two places dirt collects and are almost impossible to reach when assembled.
Threaded Stools Are Different
Some adjustable stools, particularly older and more traditional designs, raise and lower by spinning the seat on a screw thread rather than using a gas lift.
These come apart by simply turning the seat anticlockwise until it lifts off the post. The post then usually unbolts from the base.
While the thread is exposed, clean it and apply a light grease. Threaded stools that stick or squeak nearly always just want lubrication rather than repair.
Reassembly
Reverse the sequence, with one key difference at the cylinder stage. Slide the cylinder into the base socket by hand until it seats, then stand the stool upright and press down firmly with your body weight, or sit on the finished stool. Weight locks the taper properly.
Do not hammer the cylinder into the base. The valve pin at the top is delicate and a mallet blow through the strut can damage it.
Fit the seat next. Align the release lever with the valve pin before tightening anything, then test the height adjustment while the screws are still slightly loose. If the lever moves freely but the seat does not rise or fall, the lever is missing the pin and the plate needs repositioning.
Tighten screws in a diagonal sequence so the seat sits level, then check the stool for wobble by pressing down at each edge.
Handling And Storing The Parts
Wrap the cylinder in a towel or bubble wrap and lay it flat in a box. The exposed valve pin bends if the strut takes a knock on its end.
Bag upholstered seats to prevent scuffing and store them flat with nothing heavy on top, since sustained pressure flattens foam and leaves marks that do not recover.
Tape the fixings bag to the underside of a seat or put it in the same box as the base. Missing screws are the main reason a dismantled stool never goes back together.
When Rebuilding Is Not The Answer
If the cylinder sinks under weight, the seal has failed and no amount of refitting helps. Replacement cylinders are available, but measure the old one carefully: overall length, plus the taper diameter at each end, since these vary between designs.
