Making the Most of Limited Hanging Space

A small double wardrobe is one of the most common bedroom pieces in UK homes. It typically measures around 90 to 110 cm wide, fits comfortably in a single or small double bedroom, and offers just enough space for one person's essentials when arranged thoughtfully. The challenge is that without a plan, even a well made wardrobe can quickly become a jumble of half folded jumpers and tangled hangers.

At Furniture in Fashion, we hear from many customers who feel their wardrobe is too small, when in fact it is simply not being used to its full capacity. With a few simple adjustments, a compact double can hold an entire seasonal collection without strain.

Start With a Proper Edit

Before reorganising anything, take everything out. Lay items on the bed and group them by category. Trousers, shirts, jumpers, dresses, coats and occasion wear should each form their own pile. Then ask three questions of each piece. Have you worn it in the last twelve months? Does it fit you as you are now? Does it suit the life you actually live? Anything that fails all three can be donated or recycled.

This edit is the single most useful step in organising a small wardrobe. Most of us own far more than we wear, and clearing the excess instantly creates breathing room.

Choose the Right Hangers

Mismatched hangers waste space. Wire hangers from dry cleaners are particularly bulky once full. Switch to slim velvet or wooden hangers and you will gain several centimetres along the rail. Velvet hangers also stop tops from slipping, which keeps the wardrobe tidier between wears.

Keep hangers facing the same direction. This small habit makes choosing an outfit much faster in the morning.

Use the Vertical Space

Most small double wardrobes from our 2 door wardrobe range include a top shelf and a single hanging rail. Add a second short rail beneath the first for shirts and folded trousers, then use the top shelf for items you only need occasionally, such as travel bags or winter scarves. Hanging shelf organisers can divide the space further for handbags or knitwear.

If your wardrobe lacks shelves, consider adding a slim chest of drawers alongside it. Pairing the two pieces lets you keep folded items, underwear and accessories close at hand without overloading the wardrobe interior.

Organise by Category and Colour

Once everything is back inside, hang clothes by category first and then by colour within each category. Trousers together, shirts together, dresses together. Light to dark is the easiest gradient to maintain. This approach makes the wardrobe feel calmer to open and helps you spot duplicates you may not need.

Shoes are best stored outside the wardrobe in a dedicated shoe storage cabinet in the hallway. Keeping footwear out of the bedroom also reduces dust on clothing.

Seasonal Rotation

UK weather demands a full wardrobe across the year, but you rarely need every item available at once. Twice a year, swap winter coats and heavy knitwear with summer dresses and lightweight shirts. Store the off season clothes in vacuum bags or fabric boxes on top of the wardrobe, or in a blanket box at the end of the bed. This single habit roughly doubles the usable space inside the wardrobe.

Keep It Tidy Day to Day

Once organised, a small wardrobe stays tidy with very little effort if you build a few quick habits. Return clothes to the same section every time. Refold jumpers properly rather than pushing them onto a shelf. Empty pockets before hanging coats. A small lavender sachet or cedar block keeps the interior fresh and protects natural fibres.

When to Add a Second Piece

If you have edited carefully and still struggle for space, the wardrobe may simply be too small for your needs. A taller clothes storage unit or a small dressing area with open hanging can supplement the existing wardrobe without filling the room.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many items should a small double wardrobe realistically hold? With slim hangers and good folding, expect around forty to sixty hanging pieces plus a shelf of folded items. Numbers vary with garment thickness.

Should I store shoes inside the wardrobe? Only if the wardrobe has a dedicated shoe shelf at the base. Otherwise, dust and odour will transfer to clothing.

What is the best way to store knitwear? Fold knitwear flat on shelves or in shallow drawers. Hanging stretches the shoulders out of shape over time.

How often should I edit my wardrobe? Twice a year, ideally at the start of spring and autumn, alongside the seasonal rotation.

Are vacuum bags safe for all clothes? They suit cotton and synthetic items well. Avoid using them for leather, fur and structured tailoring, which can lose their shape.
