Are you seeking for an option to change your kitchen cabinets  looks without having to buy new ones? Try antiquing the old ones. It can revitalize old cabinetry and give new warm look to your kitchen. Antique cabinets go very well with a lot of styles and provide a relaxed and comfortable environment in the kitchen. There are two ways of antiquing your cabinets – distressing and staining. You can also combine these ways to create a unique look.

  1. Antiquing the kitchen cabinets with Stain

This method works well on the light colored cabinets or having light stain. To do it yourself you will need lots of paper towels, a sponge, brush and dark stain. Always try the stain on a place not so noticeable and apply on the cabinets after practicing well. Apply a lighter layer of stain on a section and wipe it off to get to the desired antique level. Apply more stain on areas like around the edges and on the handles to give a natural look.

  1. Distressing the kitchen Cabinets

This method is called distressing because it simulate wear effect is that of an old cabinet used for over a hundred years. It can be applied only on painted cabinets. A sand paper can be used to distress the cabinets. Use it especially on the edges and worn places of the cabinets. Sand the doors and the edges of the drawers revealing a thin layer of wood underneath. It depends on the personal liking either to sand the edges only or do a bit off from the middle to give an overall wear out look. It gives best results if the cabinets are dark and the color revealed is comparatively lighter or vice versa.

There are other methods of antiquing like crackle painting and faux painting as well but do practice them first before applying them on your cabinets.
