A wardrobe rarely fails because it is too small. More often it fails because the space inside has not been organised to suit the way clothes are actually used. A single hanging rail with a low shelf above it can leave more than half the height of the cupboard sitting unused. With a little planning, an existing wardrobe can hold noticeably more without changing its footprint. At Furniture in Fashion we hear from customers who have tried simple changes that quickly transformed cluttered cupboards into ordered ones, and the same ideas can work in almost any UK home.

1. Add a Second Hanging Rail

If the bulk of your wardrobe is filled with shirts, blouses, jackets and folded trousers, a single rail leaves a deep gap of empty air below the hems. A second rail fitted lower down doubles the hanging space in seconds. Telescopic rails are widely available and slot in without tools. Reserve the top rail for shorter items and the lower rail for layering pieces. Long dresses, coats and suits stay on a separate full height rail to one side. Browse our wardrobes range for designs that already include split hanging zones.

2. Use Vertical Shelves on the Inside of the Door

The inside face of a wardrobe door is one of the most underused surfaces in any bedroom. Slim adhesive racks or shallow shelves can hold belts, scarves, ties, jewellery rolls or even a small basket of socks. Choose shallow profiles so the door still closes flush. For deeper doors, look for over the door hooks that lift out without leaving marks. Anything heavy should be kept off the door, as the hinges are not designed to take constant pulling weight.

3. Bring in Stackable Boxes for Folded Items

Most wardrobes have a shelf or two above the hanging rail that is too high to use without rummaging. Fabric storage boxes with lids turn that awkward space into a tidy archive. Knitwear, summer linens, hats and out of season pieces all fit neatly inside, and a small label on the front makes seasonal swaps painless. Pair these with a separate clothes storage unit nearby for items you reach for daily, so the wardrobe itself does not become the only home for everything.

4. Add a Drawer Insert at the Base

The floor of many wardrobes is given over to shoes, but the layer above the shoes is usually wasted. A low slimline drawer unit sits on top of the wardrobe floor and creates a clean platform for everything from underwear to gym kit. If a fitted drawer is not practical, a slim freestanding chest of drawers placed beside the wardrobe can take on the same role and free up internal space for hanging.

5. Bring in a Blanket Box for Bulk Items

Pillows, duvets, throws and seasonal bedding eat into wardrobe shelves faster than anything else. Moving them out of the wardrobe and into a dedicated blanket box at the foot of the bed frees up an entire shelf or two for everyday clothes. The box doubles as a bench and works particularly well in smaller bedrooms where every piece of furniture needs to earn its place.

A Quick Plan Before You Start

Before adding inserts, empty the wardrobe completely and group items by type and frequency of use. Keep daily pieces at hand height, seasonal pieces above and bulky items in their own dedicated zone. Once the wardrobe has been mapped this way, choosing the right additions becomes much easier and far less expensive, since you only buy what the space genuinely needs. We stock modern furniture across the UK at Furniture in Fashion, with free delivery on a wide range of bedroom storage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much can a second hanging rail really add?

On average, a lower rail can almost double the hanging capacity for short items such as shirts and folded trousers. It works best in wardrobes with at least a metre of vertical hanging space.

Are over the door storage racks safe for all wardrobes?

They are safe for most modern wardrobes, but very lightweight or thin doors may flex under heavy loads. Stick to lighter items such as belts, scarves and accessories.

What is the best way to store seasonal clothes?

Fold them flat into fabric boxes with lids and place them on a high shelf or inside a blanket box. Keep them out of direct sunlight to prevent fading.

Should I add drawers inside or outside the wardrobe?

That depends on the room. If floor space is tight, internal drawer inserts work well. If you have room beside the wardrobe, a freestanding chest of drawers offers more flexibility.
