Even the simplest stool you have just built with your own two hands can be given an old, distressed look if you are willing to apply a bit more effort. Distressing the furniture will give it a less usual look, and even though it will be rougher, it will not seem as plain as newly built DIY piece. Sure, you will first of all have to think if the idea is worth it. While it is possible to distress garden and outdoor furniture to make it look more rustic, experimenting with your living furniture  pieces in the same fashion is not advisable. Yet, if you have already set your mind on giving one of your units a distressed look, here are five simple steps to help you with that:

Uneven the edges and corners

One of the main things that make any furniture look new is its sharp edges and corners. If you have ever owned a furniture item for more than a couple of years (especially if you had to move during this time period), you should already know by now that the damage is inescapable. So, if you want to make a new piece look old, you can damage it artificially. Any hammer will suffice – just go through the corner and edges until they no longer look so sharp.

Apply first paint layer

After you have given your piece an artificially old look, it is time to apply the paint. Normally, two layers are enough. However, you should decide by now which look you are trying to create. If you are going for a truly distressed look, it is advisable to start with a base layer that would be different from the final layer. This way, the first shade will be visible, and it will seem like the item has already been painted many times.

Apply second paint layer
Once the base layer has dried, you can apply the second layer – that is, the final, dominant one.

Sand the furniture piece

After the final paint layer has air dried, too – start sanding the furniture piece. You do not have to sand too hard. Plus, do not forget that there are special mechanical devices for sanding – and they can significantly facilitate your job.

Apply finish

Choosing the finish is totally up to you, but if you have already painted the furniture, choosing oil makes no sense. Wax is usually a way more reasonable idea. Plus, just a couple of layers will normally be enough.

Note, though, that this will not help you to create any sophisticated vintage furniture solutions. Sure, your unit will no longer look newly built, but it will not feature antique style or exquisite looks. For that, you will have to look for furniture solutions that have been designed in antique fashion. There are plenty of stores that can offer you similar items, as vintage style is gaining more and more popularity these days. Furniture in Fashion  is one of them. Plus, this platform features an amazing collection of contemporary furniture that is worth checking out.
