- Dining space. Start off with measuring the exact space you have designated for dining. This space will help you define the size and type of the dining table
- Type. There are two major types of dining tables – a regular and a corner one.
- Size. Have in mind two things: the functional use of the table and the available space. Don’t forget, it is not only the table you put in the dining room furniture , there are also chairs and they need some space of their own.
- Shape. You can completely let loose your imagination. There are all kinds of table shapes out there: round, oval, square, rectangular, hexagonal, etc. Just make sure your shape complements your dining area and there is enough space for the chairs.
- Old or new. Should you buy a new or used table? Don’t think. The dining table is the heart of a home, a place where you are joined with your family and friends, so it should be warm and welcoming, not old and worn out.
- Price. The price you pay for a table depends on three things: the size, the material, and where you buy it from (usually a big box retailer or an online shop can offer you a better deal)
- Material. Again, use your imagination. You can find tables made from almost any material today (wood, metal, glass, plastic, any combination of these). Select the material in accordance with the overall style of your home.
- Height. Will you be using regular chairs, custom made ones, or plain pillows for sitting on the floor? Adjust the table height to your chairs.
- Expandable or not. How often do you have dinner parties? Do you entertain a lot of people at a time? If you do, an expandable dining table is an excellent choice.
- Chairs. Don’t decide on your dining table without deciding on the chairs as well. Of course, their style and materials can vary, but you really need to consider their height and size in terms of the space they will take up when placed around the table.
