Why Britons Return LED Lighting: The UK Furniture Returns Report

Most LED lighting that comes back to a UK retailer is not faulty. It is unsuitable. The single clearest pattern we see across returned LED products is a mismatch between the light a buyer imagined and the light the fitting actually produces, and colour temperature sits at the centre of that gap.

The second driver is compatibility. LED lamps and integrated fittings interact with existing dimmer switches, transformers and drivers in ways that older filament lighting never did, and a flickering or buzzing installation reads to the buyer as a defect even when every component is working within its own specification. Sizing, fixing positions and ceiling void depth account for most of what remains.

When a buyer selects on appearance alone, the fitting arrives correct and the light feels wrong.

The pattern is consistent by room. Sitting rooms and bedrooms tolerate a narrow range: anything cooler than about 3000K flattens upholstery colour, drains warmth out of oak and walnut, and makes plaster walls look grey after dark. Kitchens and home offices behave in the opposite direction, where a neutral 4000K keeps worktops legible and reduces the yellow cast on white surfaces.
