What To Look For When Buying A House Checklist

A house is a solid investment. Yet, make sure you are making the right choice, you should bear in mind this simple ‘what to look for when buying a house’ checklist:

What To Look For When Buying A House Checklist

Neighbourhood infrastructure

This is probably the first thing that has to be considered. Most buyers start looking for homes in a particular neighborhood(s), so you probably have a couple of ideas on the subject already. Consider not only how quiet / safe it is, but also its general infrastructure – are there any decent stores, schools, playgrounds, etc. Sometimes it wouldn’t hurt to evaluate public transport infrastructure as well – after all, cars break down.

Driveway and parking

In regard to cars, make sure that the driveway is wide enough. Length of the driveway can also be important. If cars are parked at the street, think if it can accommodate yours and your neighbours’ cars, while at the same time ensuring free and easy passage.

Amount of natural light

Living in a dark and gloomy house is not simply depressive – it can be hazardous for your health. So, make sure that the house has enough windows, and that they let a lot of sun in, that the trees outside are not blocking the natural light, etc.

Heating and cooling

Living in a moderate climate, paradoxically, presupposes living in very diverse temperatures – hot in summer, cold in winter. So, you have to be sure that all heating and cooling appliances in the house operate at their full capacity.

Number of bathrooms

Yes, this is a very technical detail, but it is of primary importance. Two bathrooms per house is the absolute minimum, while bigger families can benefit from more of these facilities.

Room size and layout

Rooms should neither be too big, nor too small. Ideally, room proportions should be approximately the same. Also, check how easy it is to get from one room to another, if they are placed strategically and logically, are the passages wide or narrow, etc.

Architecture

Architectural nuances, such protruding beams or hidden niches are very important for the future interior decoration. As you start looking for furniture , you may notice that some of your ideas do not fit into the house architecture. If, for example, you are trying to create a very hi-tech atmosphere in your living room , protruding wooden beams can crumb the deal.

Staircase

Steepness of the staircase is important if you have elderly people in your family. Plus, if you are going to stay in this house till your golden days, think of the future while you still can. A staircase that is too steep may be ok for you right now, but think if it is going to be fine in 50 years.

Number of windows and their placement

Even though some of your rooms may have enough natural light, you should make sure that all of them are light. Plus, do not forget to check out the scenery behind the windows.

This is the essential ‘what to look for when buying a house’ checklist, and hopefully it will help you wrap your head around the whole thing. Good luck with your search!
