An IP rating is the only specification on an outdoor light fitting that tells you whether it will survive a British winter. It is a two digit code defined in the international standard IEC 60529, and it describes exactly two things: resistance to solid objects, and resistance to water. The first digit of an IP code describes protection against solid objects, running from protection against large objects up to full dust tightness. The second digit describes protection against water, and it is the digit that decides where a fitting can go. Value 4 covers splashing water from any direction. Value 5 covers water jets. Value 6 covers powerful jets. Value 7 covers temporary immersion in water, and value 8 covers continuous immersion under conditions specified by the manufacturer.
One nuance is routinely misunderstood. The immersion tests at 7 and 8 do not automatically include the jet tests at 5 and 6, because they represent different kinds of exposure. A fitting designed to sit under water may not have been tested against a pressure jet. That is why some products are marked with two codes, and it is a sign of a careful manufacturer rather than a contradiction. An IP code says nothing about corrosion, ultraviolet degradation, frost or impact, and all four affect outdoor fittings in the UK.
