The finish on an outdoor light fitting fails long before the light itself does. In a maritime climate with frequent wetting, mild salt loading and very few properly dry months, the weak point is almost never the lamp: it is the coating, the fixings and the joint where two different metals meet.
Our conclusion is straightforward. Material choice and fixing quality decide how an exterior fitting ages in Britain, and the specification that survives is boringly consistent: marine grade stainless steel or solid brass, a properly cured powder coat over correctly pretreated aluminium, stainless fasteners throughout, and an ingress rating matched to the actual position on the building rather than to the garden in general.
The title of this series describes a finish assessment across a group of fittings, and we want to be exact about what that means. We have not run a controlled exposure trial with instrumented panels, salt spray chambers or measured gloss retention, and no laboratory test data sits behind this piece. Reporting percentages for coating loss or corrosion onset would require that apparatus, so we have not reported any.
What follows instead is an interpretation of how the common exterior finishes behave in British conditions, built on published standards, on well established metallurgy and on what we see when customers describe or return fittings from different parts of the country. Where a figure would be invented, we have written the point qualitatively and left it there.
The Met Office describes the UK climate as temperate maritime, and that phrase explains most exterior finish behaviour here. There is no long baking dry season to drive moisture out of joints, and no deep sustained freeze to keep everything locked and dry either. Instead there is repeated wetting and partial drying, often several cycles in a single week, with wind driven rain arriving at walls rather than falling neatly from above.
Repeated wetting is more aggressive than total immersion because it concentrates whatever the water carried: salt near the coast, traffic grime near a main road, fertiliser and organic debris in a rural garden. Each cycle leaves a thin deposit behind, and the next shower rewets it. This is why fittings under a deep porch often look worse than fittings in the open. Sheltered surfaces get wetted by splash and by airborne moisture but are never rinsed clean, so deposits accumulate instead of washing off.
Orientation matters for the same reason. A north facing wall in a shaded side return holds surface moisture for most of the winter. Fittings there develop algal and lichen growth around the base and the gasket line, which holds yet more water against the joint. Three failure routes account for nearly everything we see reported on exterior fittings.
The first is coating breakdown. Powder coating on aluminium is durable when the substrate has been chromate or chrome free pretreated and the film properly cured. Where pretreatment is thin, water eventually reaches the aluminium and forms a white bloom that lifts the coating from beneath. The visible symptom is a blister or a flaking edge rather than a rust stain, because aluminium does not rust in the familiar red sense.
The second is fastener failure. This is the most common and the most avoidable. A fitting can have an excellent body and still stain a light coloured render within a season because the bracket screws, the gland nut or an internal spring clip are plated mild steel. ISO 12944, which governs protective paint systems for steel structures, treats the specification of the whole assembly as the unit of protection rather than the largest surface, and exterior lighting deserves the same logic.
The third is the gasket and entry joint. Water ingress rarely arrives through the lens: it arrives through the cable gland, a cracked silicone seal or a drilled fixing hole that was never sleeved. Once inside a sealed housing, moisture has nowhere to escape, so a high IP rating can make internal condensation worse rather than better if the fitting is mounted where warm air can enter and cool.

Ingress protection is usually specified too loosely. A fitting under a deep covered porch, protected on three sides, faces a different exposure from a wall light on a gable end that takes wind driven rain directly. BS EN 60529 gives the framework, and reading the second digit carefully is the whole exercise: IP44 for protected positions, IP65 where the fitting takes direct weather, IP67 or higher for anything at or below ground level where water can pool.
Ground recessed fittings deserve particular care. Drainage beneath the housing matters more than the rating stamped on the body, because a fitting sitting in a saucer of standing water is effectively immersed for weeks at a time. Electrical work outdoors falls under Part P of the Building Regulations in England and Wales, and the IET Wiring Regulations set the requirements for RCD protection and cable routing. Buy for the position rather than the product photograph. If the property is within sight of the sea, treat grade 316 stainless, solid brass or a heavy marine specification powder coat as the starting point, and check that the manufacturer states the fastener material. If the fixings are not specified, assume they are the weakest part and replace them with stainless equivalents at installation.
Mount fittings so that water can leave. A small stainless spacer behind a wall plate lets the face of the wall dry and stops a damp trap forming against render. Drill fixing holes with a slight downward angle, sleeve them, and use an exterior grade sealant across the top and both sides of a back plate while leaving the bottom edge open so any water that enters can drain out again.
Plan for change on brass and copper. These finishes are chosen for how they age, so bright and uniform is the wrong expectation. If a consistent appearance matters more, powder coated aluminium in a dark neutral or grade 316 stainless will hold its look with less intervention.
Finally, treat exterior lighting as part of the garden scheme rather than an afterthought. IP44 is the practical minimum for a position protected by an overhang or porch, and IP65 suits any wall that takes direct wind driven rain. Fittings at or below ground level need IP67 or higher because water can pool around them.
Grade 316 performs well in coastal air, but grade 304 is a different material despite the similar name and will stain in the same position. Solid brass is an equally sound coastal choice if you are content for it to patinate.
Aluminium does not produce red rust, so the stain almost certainly comes from a steel fixing, bracket or internal component. Replacing the fasteners with stainless equivalents usually stops it recurring.
You can, although a brush applied finish will not match the durability of a factory cure. Touching in chips early with a matched exterior paint is more effective than repainting the whole body later.
Twice a year suits most inland properties, and a fresh water rinse every few weeks is worthwhile within a mile of the sea. Cleaning matters most on sheltered fittings that rain never reaches.
