Fixed leg stools are the most straightforward to shorten, provided you are methodical. Turn the stool upside down on a protected surface and remove the foot caps or glides so you are measuring the timber or metal itself.
Mark the cut on one leg, then transfer that exact measurement to the others rather than measuring each independently, where small errors accumulate. Wrap masking tape around each leg at the line: it gives you a crisp edge to follow and stops timber splintering. Use a fine tooth saw for wood and a hacksaw or metal cutting blade for tubular steel.
Cut square. A leg cut at even a slight angle will rock, and no amount of adjusting the others will fix it. If your stool has splayed legs, remember the cut must follow the angle of the floor contact, not a right angle across the leg, or the foot will sit on an edge instead of flat.
Once all four are cut, stand the stool on a level floor and check for rock. Sand down any high point in small increments. Refit the caps or glides, or fit new ones if the old ones have distorted.
This is where most attempts go wrong. Cutting an inch off the legs moves the footrest an inch closer to the floor, and on stools where the rails sit low, you can end up with a footrest that is barely off the ground and effectively useless.
Before cutting, measure the gap between the seat and the footrest, and between the footrest and the floor. If removing your target amount leaves less than about six inches under the footrest, consider reducing the cut and accepting slightly less clearance at the top, or repositioning the rail if the construction allows.
You also cannot cut below a cross rail on most designs, because the rail joins the legs at a fixed point and the remaining stub below it provides the stability. Cutting into or through that joint compromises the frame entirely.
Traditional screw stools adjust by winding the seat down the thread, and many have far more range than people realise. Lift the seat clear, clean the thread, apply a little grease and wind it fully down to see where it lands.
If that is still not low enough, the column can sometimes be replaced with a shorter one, depending on how the base is built. Cutting a threaded column is possible on some designs but you must cut from the bottom, keep the cut square, and be certain the base still seats properly afterwards.
Cutting more than two or three inches off a stool usually spoils its proportions. The footrest ends up too low, the back looks too tall for the seat, and the frame angles no longer read correctly. If you need a large reduction, you are effectively trying to turn a bar height stool into a counter height one, and buying the right height is a better outcome than reshaping the wrong one.
It is also not worth cutting an upholstered stool with an integrated base plate, or any stool where the legs are structural to a moulded shell. In those cases the frame is doing more than holding the seat up.
