Do Display Cabinets Protect Collectables From Fading? UV Transmission Test

A glass fronted display cabinet gives collectables meaningful protection from dust, handling and knocks. It gives them only partial protection from fading. Ordinary glass absorbs the shorter, most energetic part of the ultraviolet band, but it passes a great deal of the longer wave ultraviolet and effectively all of the visible light, and visible light fades pigments and dyes too. A cabinet is therefore a useful component of a preservation strategy, not a substitute for one.

How fading actually happens

Fading is photochemical. Light carries energy, that energy breaks the chemical bonds that give a dye or pigment its colour, and the colour is progressively lost. Shorter wavelengths carry more energy, which is why ultraviolet is the most damaging part of the spectrum, but visible light is not innocent. Blue light in particular does real damage to sensitive pigments over time.

Two consequences follow, and both are frequently misunderstood. First, because ultraviolet is not the only culprit, a cabinet with excellent ultraviolet performance will still allow fading if the object sits in bright daylight for years. Second, because the damage is cumulative, a low level of exposure over a long period produces the same outcome as a high level over a short one. An object in a permanently bright room is being damaged continuously even though nothing appears to be happening on any given day.

What the glass in a cabinet does and does not do

Ordinary soda lime glass, the material in most cabinet doors and shelves, absorbs the shortest ultraviolet wavelengths well and transmits progressively more as the wavelength lengthens towards the visible band. That is a genuine benefit, and it is why a cabinet is better than an open shelf. It is also why cabinets are routinely oversold as protective.

Laminated glass behaves differently. It is made from two panes bonded around a plastic interlayer, and that interlayer absorbs ultraviolet strongly. Where a cabinet or a window is laminated, ultraviolet transmission drops sharply. The same effect is available as a retrofit through applied window film, which is usually the more practical intervention in a home because it treats the window rather than the cabinet, protecting everything in the room including the furniture, the flooring and the upholstery.

Position beats specification

In a British home the most powerful variable is where the cabinet stands. A cabinet on the wall opposite a south facing window receives direct sun for part of the day through much of the year. The same cabinet on the wall that contains the window, or on a return wall out of the sun path, receives diffuse light only. The difference in cumulative exposure over a decade is very large, and it costs nothing to choose correctly at the point the furniture is arranged.

This is worth thinking about before buying, because it also determines which pieces should go where. Robust materials can take the bright positions and sensitive ones should be kept back.
