Occasionally, maple is used for office furniture, too. You’ll find desks and cabinets made of it, and boardroom tables veneered with it. Even restaurants and pubs feature good solid maple in their decors. I’ve been in a few New England bars where the bar was walnut, but when you sat at, you took your seat on a maple barstool.

The idea of a bar’s stool being made out of a wood with a discernable grain and finish is not news. After all, the older public houses in this country feature lots of great old bars in hand finished wood such as birds-eye maple, white pine, hickory, ash and walnut. The bar stools , however, don’t usually last as long as the bar. They are often replaced over the years. So, it is not unusual to find that bar in one wood and stool in another wood scenario played out in older bars all over the world.

So, what about a new bar where you want to mimic the rich look and feel of an older one? Why wouldn’t it work for the clever owner of this new establishment to find a great old bar in one wood and then carefully add stools of another or varying woods to make the place “feel older”? It would probably do the job. Still, that maple barstool would, undoubtedly, look perfectly wonderful with a maple bar. After all, that’s probably how it would have started out, and maybe its how you should start out, too. Go with new maple all around and let the wood ripen with age and wear, until one day, your bar is the one that others want theirs to look like. It’s a good idea if you’re in this for the long haul, and it’s a good look for the bar even if you aren’t.

Few woods are as beloved as maple for home furnishings.
