A standing desk fails in a British home for one reason more often than any other: the room cannot absorb the desk plus the space a standing user needs behind it. The desktop itself is rarely the problem. The problem is the 90 cm to 100 cm of clear floor a person occupies when they step back and rise, in a room that was designed as a third bedroom.

Three property types produce three different problems. In terraced houses the study is usually the smallest bedroom above the stairs, often with a sloping bulkhead or a boiler cupboard eating one wall, so the usable wall run is shorter than the room dimension suggests. Set the height by elbow, not by the numbers on the frame. Sit or stand naturally, let the arms hang, then bend the elbows to ninety degrees: that is the desktop height for each posture. Screen top at eye level, screen distance around an arm length. If the desk cannot reach the standing figure for the tallest user in the house, it is the wrong frame.
Plan the cable run at the highest position and let it hang slack at the lowest, and route it so nothing tightens or snags as the desk moves. Keep a clear knee zone under the desktop and put storage beside the desk instead of under it. Finally, check the door swing and the radiator before fixing the layout, because both are easy to design around at the planning stage and expensive to work around afterwards.
