A garden parasol is a sun protection product that is almost never assessed as one. The important point for a shopper is that UPF is a property of a specific fabric in a specific condition, not of a material category. Polyester as a class tends to have useful inherent UV absorption, but a loosely woven polyester will transmit far more than a tightly woven one. Cotton canvas can perform well when dense and poorly when light and open. Acrylic canopy fabrics are widely used outdoors because they hold colour and resist weathering, but their UV performance still comes down to how they are constructed.
Because of this, an untested claim on a parasol tells you very little. Where a manufacturer states a tested rating, that is a real specification. Where a listing simply says UV protective without a rating or a standard, it is a description rather than a measurement, and the sensible response is to judge the canopy by the things you can assess yourself.
Hold the canopy fabric up to daylight. A dense fabric shows little light through the weave. An open one shows the structure of the yarns clearly, and every point of light is a route for ultraviolet. This is a crude test, and it is a reasonable proxy, because visible light transmission through a gap and ultraviolet transmission through the same gap are closely related.
Then consider four factors that change performance in use. Tension is the first: a canopy pulled tight over a frame has a slightly more open weave than the same fabric relaxed, so heavily stretched panels perform marginally worse than the flat fabric suggests. Moisture is the second: wet fabric transmits more ultraviolet, so a canopy left up through a shower and used immediately afterwards is temporarily less protective. The most consequential fact about parasols has nothing to do with the fabric. Ultraviolet radiation reaches the skin by three routes: directly from the sun, scattered from the sky, and reflected from surfaces. A canopy blocks the first route and part of the second. It does nothing about the third.
In a British garden the reflecting surfaces are usually pale paving, rendered walls, glazing and water. A patio in full sun beside a light coloured house wall bounces a meaningful amount of ultraviolet into the shaded area, which is why people can still burn after an afternoon that felt spent entirely in the shade.
