Occasional Tables Odd Furniture Terms

I know that I take words a bit too literally. It’s probably part and parcel with being a writer. Still, when I am shopping in a furniture store and I see an item labeled as an “occasional table”, I begin to wonder. If it is only a table on occasion, what is it the rest of the time? Lots of furniture names make you wonder. Loveseats are for more than making out, and they look a lot like a small sofa. Why not just call them small sofas? Okay, I am getting carried away. What I really wanted to talk about was all of the fun you can have with occasional tables all of the time!

Of course, let’s set the record straight. I am fully aware of the fact that they’re called occasional because they can have multiple uses and can be used in different sorts of decors. While I might find their name a bit confusing, I really enjoy the use of an occasional table beside my sofa to hold my carafe of wine and a plate of crackers when guests are around and then that same table in the corner by my sewing chair to hold the lamp when they are not.

Occasional tables, coffee tables, end tables and other specialized tables can spend time in the occasional category. I have, on occasion, used my coffee table on my deck to hold platters of drinks. In that same vein, my antique drum table makes an excellent table for a chess game. Find an occasion and choose a table, then you will get a better understanding of the term.

So, whether you buy them as occasional tables or to use as one sort of table regularly and then for improvising during certain circumstances, remember that small, easy to move tables are essential to many great decorating styles. Be sure you have plenty on hand, since occasions are just bound to happen!
