The single figure that decides whether a kitchen island works is not the island’s own size. It is the width of the walkway left around it. A generous island in a room that cannot give it clearance produces a worse kitchen than a modest island with room to move, and this is the trade off British households most often get wrong.
Comparable national data on UK kitchen dimensions is not published in a form that allows a reliable average to be quoted, so this report is built from something more dependable: the fixed depths of standard kitchen units, the space a human body needs to pass and to bend, and the room proportions typical of terraced housing and recent new build stock.
An island only fits if the room width can absorb three things at once: the run of units on one side, the island itself, and the walkways between and around them. Because unit depth is effectively fixed, the calculation is unusually clean.
Take a room with a single run of base units at roughly 63 cm including the worktop overhang. Add a walkway of 100 cm. Add an island at 90 cm deep. Add a second walkway on the far side at 100 cm. The total is 353 cm before anything else is considered, and that is a room comfortably over three and a half metres wide. Reduce the walkways to the bare 90 cm minimum and the total falls to around 333 cm, which is still a substantial room by British standards.
Where units run down both sides, the arithmetic becomes harsher still, because two unit depths plus two walkways plus the island quickly exceeds four metres. This is the honest reason so many UK kitchens cannot take an island: the room is not short of floor area, it is short of width in one specific direction.
Ninety centimetres is not an arbitrary number. It is roughly the space a person needs to walk through comfortably while carrying something in both hands. It works when only one person is in the kitchen and nothing is open.
The moment a second person enters, or an oven door, dishwasher or under counter drawer is opened, that 90 cm is consumed. An open dishwasher door alone can project 50 cm or more into the walkway. A person crouching to load it needs the rest. This is why 120 cm is the width that makes an island genuinely pleasant rather than merely possible, and why kitchens designed at the minimum feel cramped in use even though they measured correctly on paper.
Corners deserve separate thought. A walkway that measures adequately along its length can still pinch at a corner where two circulation routes meet. The tightest point governs the experience, not the average.
The English Housing Survey records the composition of the national housing stock, and terraced and semi detached homes make up a large part of it. In much of that stock the kitchen occupies a rear addition or a single room off the hallway, with a width set by the original building rather than by any modern planning logic. Those rooms are frequently long and narrow, which is the worst possible proportion for an island.

Removing a wall between kitchen and dining space often creates the width an island needs while also creating the second circulation route that makes it useful. An island with stools is not an island with a worktop overhang added. It is a second piece of furniture occupying the same footprint, and it needs its own space behind.
Each stool needs roughly 60 cm of island width to avoid elbows meeting. Behind the stool, around 100 cm of clear floor allows someone to pull it out, sit down and stand again without colliding with whatever is behind them. If that space overlaps a main walkway, the kitchen works only while nobody is seated, which defeats the purpose.
Overhang depth matters for comfort. A shallow overhang leaves knees pressed against the island carcass. Around 25 to 30 cm of clear knee space under the worktop is what makes seated use tolerable for more than a few minutes. Where even a peninsula will not fit, a slim freestanding unit against a wall can carry preparation space and storage without touching the walkway calculation at all. Plan seating separately from the island. Allow 60 cm of width per stool, 100 cm of clear floor behind, and 25 to 30 cm of knee space beneath the overhang. If those numbers cannot coexist with the walkways, put the seating in the dining area instead and keep the island as a working surface.
Do not size the island to the room’s floor area. A large island in a square room can still fail if the width is unevenly distributed, and a modest island in a well proportioned room will outperform it every time.
