How To Make Furniture Weatherproof: 3 Common Approaches

One can justly say that outdoor and garden furniture  is under a lot of stress from the outside factors. Sure, some small seasonal items can be hidden but some others will stay outside all through the year – a bench is the most obvious example. So, regular maintenance of any outdoor furniture is your responsibility. The first thing you have to do is to make your exposed items waterproof. The bad news is that this is not a single-time procedure – it will have to be repeated from time to time. The good news is that it is not difficult, and you will not require any professional help doing it.

How To Make Furniture Weatherproof: 3 Common Approaches

Here are some of the most common ways to protect your outdoor furniture from rain, fog, or any other kind of moisture.

Waterproof sealers

There are special waterproof wood sealers that are sold in any hardware or furniture store. They are ready-made and usually come in spray bottles, so the application of the liquid will not give you any trouble. You can simply apply this spray from time to time, and nothing else. Though, if you want to achieve more durable results, you will have to sand the piece first and then apply the sealer. It has to be done at least once a year.

Painting and recoating

Paint is another means of protecting your furniture from humidity. Yet, you should not think that if you have painted your porch bench once, it can stay protected for years. Just like with the sealers, you will have to repaint your outdoor furniture regularly – ideally, any piece requires recoating at least once a year. That is, you will have to remove the old paint (there are special strippers), sand the piece, and paint it anew.

Regular polishing

Oils and waxes, as well as some other types of polishes, are also useful in protecting your furniture. Soaking your piece with teak oil (as for instance) will surely take less time than completely recoating it. On the other hand, you will have to do it once a month – not once a year.

External protection

And, of course, you should not underestimate the importance of external protection. Use special furniture covers during cold and rainy seasons. Remove some folding items in winter. If possible, install your garden sets under a shed – not only rain, but also sun can negatively affect your furniture.

Finally, do not forget that it is possible to buy waterproof furniture in UK stores. Sure, this will not take the maintenance off your hands – not completely, anyway. You will still have to maintain your outdoor furniture, but at least the very first stage of the process will be taken care of professionally. A gorgeous selection of various furniture items is available at Furniture in Fashion  store. The site is different from the majority of e-commerce platforms (for UK residents at least) because it is a local company that has warehouses and showrooms in the country. This, of course, significantly reduces lead times and ensures quick delivery of every order.
