Polyurethane varnish is harder wearing but shows damage more obviously and is difficult to repair locally. Wax alone looks lovely but offers limited protection against spills.

Stand the stool on a genuinely flat floor and check for rock. If one leg is proud, mark it and trim the smallest amount you can with a sharp block plane rather than sawing.

Sit on it and shift your weight side to side. Any movement in the joints means a joint has not pulled up properly, and it is better to address it now with a screw or a glued dowel than after months of use. Then put your full weight on the front edge of the seat, which is the loading condition that tips a badly proportioned stool. If the stool feels like it wants to lift at the back, your seat overhangs the frame too far at the front.
