How To Decorate A Dark Hallway

To anyone familiar with gothic literature and movies, dark hallways and corridors are nothing new. Then again, it is one thing to watch such settings on-screen. It is not until one actually experiences a dark hallway that one realizes how terrifying such a space can be for the inhabitants of a house, or even to a guest. One should, therefore, familiarize oneself with a few basic concepts of how to decorate a dark hallway.

Sometimes, darkness itself can be fascinating. The role of the interior designer would be to mediate it. Strategically placed light sources to create alternating zones of darkness and illumination is an artistic alternative, especially with a few antique decorations in the illuminated areas. The decorator can experiment with different combinations of antique artifacts to find out which sequence has the most profound visual impact.

Some hallways  have a door at the end. In such cases, the door can be flanked on both sides by dim sources of light. Even if there is a vacant wall at the end of the hallway, it should ideally be illuminated. Doing so provides the classic “light at the end of the tunnel” effect for large hallways. If there is a mirror at the end, the light source should be positioned in a way that it does not distort the reflection. Carpeting is an essential component of hallway decoration. The design of the carpet should be commensurate with the rest of the decorations. Considering that carpets and curtains are key components in generating the ambience of any room, one should place adequate care in selecting the designs. For example, a carpet bearing a contemporary design is inappropriate if the drapes and decorations used with it are traditional.
