How To Choose Optimal Small Living Room Furniture Arrangement: 6 Important Rules

When we think of living rooms, we usually imagine the most spacious room in the entire house, but this picture is actually far from reality —  most small flats have tiny living rooms. That doesn’t mean they cannot look inviting and welcoming, though. All in all, the interior of a small living room should meet two main requirements – include all necessary furniture and make the room appear more spacious. There are several rules as to small living room furniture arrangement, which prevent it from looking messy and cluttered and ensure it meets the above mentioned requirements:

Choose furniture of matching size

The first rule to stick to is to choose matching size furniture. There are lots of small sized sofas, TV stands, coffee tables and display units in furniture stores  both in UK and abroad, and you can always choose something that would fit into your living room – of course, as long as you know its exact dimensions.

Keep your interior light and simple

If your living room is very small, furnishing it with cumbersome heavy old-fashioned furniture is never a good idea – not unless you want it to look like a gloomy den. Instead, choose simple furniture of light wood shades, with lots of transparent tempered glass surfaces which add lightness and space to the whole picture.

Use corners and vertical space

Small living rooms still have a lot of vertical space, so it’s a good idea to use it wisely. Get a set of wall mount shelves instead of a display cabinet  and use them to showcase your valuables, decor elements and memorabilia. Use corners as well, for example, buy an L-shaped modular sofa or go for a compact corner TV stand.

Work on space around windows

In most living rooms, a spot near the window usually remains unoccupied – why not use its hidden potential? One of the best ideas on small living room furniture arrangement suggests using the space by the window to accommodate a small sofa. This arrangement looks great, but make sure that the distance between the sofa and the radiator is at least 30 cm. Get rid of heavy window curtains and replace them with shutters or blinds instead.

Open up the centre of the room

Small living room furniture arrangement aims to leave as much space open and possible, so the centre of the room should, ideally, stay open, not cluttered. Place your living room furniture units alongside the walls to achieve this effect.

Go for light colours

And, of course, you should never overlook the importance of properly balanced colour sheme as you work on the optimal small living room furniture arrangement. To make the small space appear more light and open, a combination of whites and pastels with bright colour accents is the best way to go. Wallpaper or upholstery with big flowers and geometric patterns will only make  your small living room appear more cluttered, and are more suitable for larger spaces.
