For years sofa beds had a reputation for being uncomfortable. Thin mattresses, awkward metal bars and frames that creaked at the slightest movement put many people off them entirely. Things have moved on. The mattresses inside modern sofa beds can offer a genuine night’s sleep, provided you know what to look for. The trick is to treat the mattress as the most important part of the decision, not an afterthought.
Across our range at Furniture in Fashion, the question we hear most often is whether a sofa bed can really be comfortable. The honest answer is yes, but only when the mattress matches the way it will be used.
The first question to ask is how many nights a year someone will sleep on it. A sofa bed used by visiting family twice a year does not need the same mattress as one slept on every night by a lodger or a teenager. For occasional use, a thinner foam mattress around ten to twelve centimetres deep works well. For regular sleeping, look for at least fourteen centimetres and a more supportive construction.
Our sofa beds collection ranges across both ends of this spectrum, so it pays to read the mattress specification on each piece.
There are three main mattress types you will come across in sofa beds. Each suits a different kind of sleeper.
Foam mattresses are the most common in lighter sofa beds. They are easy to fold, lightweight and affordable. High density foam offers reasonable support, but cheaper foams can flatten over time.
Memory foam mattresses mould to the body and reduce pressure points. They suit side sleepers and anyone who finds firmer mattresses uncomfortable. Look for a memory foam layer over a supportive base rather than memory foam alone.
Pocket sprung mattresses are the closest to a traditional bed mattress. Individual springs respond to weight independently, giving good support across the body. They are heavier and more expensive, but they make the most difference for regular sleeping.
Even the best mattress will feel uncomfortable on a poor frame. Older sofa beds often had a horizontal bar running across the middle, which sleepers could feel through the mattress. Modern designs use a sprung slatted base or a continuous mesh that distributes weight evenly. When choosing, check what sits beneath the mattress as much as the mattress itself.
Corner sofa beds in particular tend to use larger and more stable frames, which is one reason they make such good guest beds. Our corner sofas with bed function are worth a look if you have the space.
Mattress depth has the biggest impact on perceived comfort. As a rough guide, under ten centimetres is suitable for short overnight use only. Ten to fourteen centimetres works for occasional guests staying a few nights. Fourteen to eighteen centimetres handles regular weekly use. Over eighteen centimetres approaches the feel of a standard bed mattress and suits nightly sleeping.
Side sleepers benefit most from deeper, softer constructions because of pressure on the shoulders and hips. Back sleepers tend to prefer firmer support. Couples should think about whether they will both use the bed and choose accordingly.
If you already own a sofa bed with a mattress that feels a little thin, a mattress topper can transform the experience. A five centimetre memory foam topper adds noticeable softness and pressure relief. Pair it with proper sheets, a duvet and pillows rather than throws and cushions, and the bed begins to feel like a bed rather than a folded out sofa. Have a look at our mattresses range for compatible options.
Before committing, check the open mattress dimensions, not just the sofa size. A so called double sofa bed may have a slightly narrower mattress than a standard double, which matters more than you might think. Check the weight rating of the frame. Ask whether the mattress can be removed and replaced separately, because mattresses wear out faster than frames. If a brand offers different mattress upgrades on the same frame, this is usually a good sign that they understand the product.
For the wider sofa bed range and full specifications, our fabric sofas section is a useful place to compare different frame and mattress pairings.
How long does a sofa bed mattress last?
With occasional use, a quality foam mattress lasts five to seven years. Pocket sprung mattresses in heavier use can last around seven to ten years before they need replacing.
Can I use a regular mattress on a sofa bed?
Generally no. Sofa bed frames are designed to fold around a specific mattress depth and flexibility, so a standard mattress will not fold correctly.
Is memory foam too hot for a sofa bed?
Some traditional memory foams retain heat, but modern gel infused versions and open cell foams sleep cooler and work well year round.
How do I keep a sofa bed mattress fresh between uses?
Air it out for a few hours when the bed is open, rotate it occasionally and use a washable mattress protector to keep it clean for the next guest.
