You can reduce this to five hundred and fifty millimetres where the stools are slim and the seating is used for shorter periods such as breakfast or a coffee. Below five hundred millimetres, adults sit shoulder to shoulder and the arrangement stops being used except when the kitchen is full.

Measure centre to centre between stool positions rather than the gaps between them, because seat widths vary and centre spacing is what determines whether shoulders collide. As a cross check, aim for one hundred and fifty to two hundred millimetres of visible gap between adjacent seats.
