The number that matters is not the one on the label but how many of your shoes fit, which depends on sole thickness, shoe height and how the internal compartments are arranged.

A single tilting drawer holds three to four pairs of flat shoes, or two pairs of trainers. A two drawer cabinet, the most common size in UK halls, holds six to eight flat pairs or four to five mixed pairs. Cupboard style units with fixed shelves usually allow four to six pairs per shelf depending on width, so a three shelf cabinet manages twelve to eighteen pairs. Tall slim towers with five or six shelves reach twenty to twenty four pairs but the top two shelves are awkward for daily use.
Open benches and racks are the most honest about capacity because you can see exactly what fits. A two tier bench typically takes six to eight pairs, and unlike enclosed units it will accept boots and thick soles without wasting space.
Tilting drawer units are the biggest offenders, and the reason is geometry. The drawer pivots forward, so shoes sit at a shallow angle with the toe pointing up. That works beautifully for a court shoe or a plimsoll, which are thin from sole to upper. A trainer with a 40mm sole and a padded collar is three times thicker at the heel, so where three flat shoes fit side by side, two trainers will not.
Height is the second constraint. Most tilting drawers accept shoes up to around 120mm tall at the heel. Chunky trainers, ankle boots and children’s school shoes with reinforced heels often exceed this, and forcing the drawer shut damages both the shoe and the mechanism.
Shelf units are more predictable but lose capacity to fixed shelf spacing. If the gap between shelves is 180mm and your shoes are 110mm tall, the remaining 70mm is dead space you cannot use.
Rather than guessing, spend ten minutes measuring. Take your bulkiest regular shoe, usually a trainer or a work boot, and measure its height at the heel and its width at the widest point. Then measure your flattest shoe the same way.
Divide the internal width of the compartment you are considering by your widest shoe measurement to get pairs per row. Most adult shoes are 90mm to 110mm wide, so a 600mm wide shelf takes five to six shoes side by side, which is three pairs if stored as pairs, or up to six single shoes if you alternate directions.
That alternating trick is worth knowing. Placing one shoe heel forward and its partner toe forward lets each shoe sit into the space the other leaves, gaining around fifteen per cent more capacity on a flat shelf. It does not work in tilting drawers, where the angle is fixed.
The most common planning mistake is sizing a hall unit for an entire shoe collection. Hallway storage should hold only footwear in current rotation: daily shoes, work shoes, school shoes and one smarter pair per person. Everything else belongs in a bedroom wardrobe, under a bed or in an ottoman.
For one person that is usually three to four pairs. For a couple, six to eight. For a family of four with school age children, twelve to sixteen, though children’s shoes are smaller so they use less width than the number suggests.

Children’s shoes are smaller but more numerous, and they change size regularly. That is five pairs per child, and only two or three of them are in daily use.
The practical answer is to give children the lowest compartment so they can reach it themselves, and to keep wellingtons out of the unit entirely on a tray by the door. Wellingtons are tall, often wet and almost never fit standard shoe storage.
Ankle boots take roughly the space of two pairs of flat shoes. Knee high boots do not fit conventional compartments at all and should be stored upright in a wardrobe or laid on a deep low shelf.
If boots make up a large share of your footwear, prioritise a unit with at least one tall open section rather than one with a high total pair count. A cabinet advertised as holding eighteen pairs of flat shoes may hold only nine pairs of ankle boots, which is still a good result if the compartments accommodate them without crushing.
A few adjustments make a measurable difference without buying a larger unit.
Remove shoe boxes. Boxes waste around forty per cent of the space they occupy and make it harder to see what you own. If you want protection, use fabric dust bags for occasional pairs stored elsewhere.
Use the vertical space above the unit. A wall mounted rack, a row of hooks or a shelf above a low cabinet adds storage without taking floor area. This is often more effective than replacing the cabinet with a taller one, because it keeps the corridor feeling open.
Consider a second smaller unit rather than one large one. Two shallow cabinets on opposite walls can hold more than a single deep unit while leaving the walkway clearer, particularly in an L shaped hall.

Depth is consistent at around 300mm for adult shoes stored straight on, or 170mm to 200mm if stored at an angle in a tilting drawer. This is why tilting units are the answer in narrow halls despite their capacity limits.
Shoe collections grow, and hallway units rarely get replaced. Build in around twenty per cent spare capacity when choosing, so the unit still closes comfortably in two years. A cabinet crammed to capacity is harder to use daily and the doors or drawers take more strain.
Equally, avoid buying far larger than needed on the assumption that space will get used. In a narrow British hallway, unused width costs more than unused storage saves.
