How Do You Shorten Metal Bar Stool Legs?

The Short Answer

Shorten metal bar stool legs by working out exactly how much to remove, marking every leg from a level floor rather than from each other, wrapping the cut line with masking tape, then cutting with a hacksaw fitted with a fine metal blade or a pipe cutter for tubular legs. File the burr, refit the floor caps and check the stool sits level before you touch the second stool.

This works well on plain tubular or square section steel legs. It does not work on gas lift stools with a single central column, since the column houses the mechanism and cutting it destroys the stool. For those, replacing the gas cylinder with a shorter one is the only sensible route.

First, Check Whether Your Stool Can Be Cut

Before buying a blade, identify what you are dealing with.

Four separate legs in tube or square section can be shortened. This is the straightforward case.

A single central column with a swivel or gas lift mechanism cannot. The column contains the gas cylinder and the telescoping tube. Cutting it releases pressurised gas and leaves you with an unusable stool. Some models allow you to fit a shorter replacement cylinder, so check the manufacturer’s parts list first.

A cantilever or sled base is technically cuttable but rarely worth it, because the geometry means removing length changes the angle at which the base meets the floor and you will lose stability.

Legs with a welded footrest ring need particular care. Shortening below the ring is fine, but if you remove enough length that the ring ends up close to the floor, the stool will look wrong and the footrest becomes useless.

Also check whether the legs are hollow or solid, and whether they are steel or aluminium. Aluminium cuts far more easily and is more prone to distortion if clamped hard.

Working Out How Much to Remove

Do not guess. Measure the target and subtract.

Measure from the floor to the underside of your worktop. Subtract two hundred and fifty to three hundred millimetres for knee clearance. That gives your target seat height.

Measure the current seat height from the floor to the top of the seat, including any compression if the seat is padded. Sit on it and have someone measure, since a soft seat can read thirty millimetres lower under load.

The difference between current and target is what you remove. Remove slightly less than the calculation on your first attempt, because you can always take more off and you cannot put it back. Cutting five millimetres shy and checking is a sound habit.

Note that shortening a stool with splayed legs also narrows its footprint slightly, since the legs converge as they rise. On a heavily splayed base, removing eighty millimetres or more can reduce stability noticeably, so stay conservative.

Marking Accurately

Accuracy here is what determines whether the stool rocks afterwards.

Stand the stool on a genuinely flat surface. A kitchen floor is rarely flat enough, so use a sheet of board or a workbench top and check it with a spirit level.

Set a marking gauge or a simple block of wood cut to the removal height, then run it around each leg in turn while the stool stands upright. Marking from the floor upwards with the stool assembled is far more reliable than measuring each leg individually with a tape, because it automatically accounts for any existing differences between the legs.

Wrap masking tape or electrical tape around each leg with its edge on the mark. The tape gives you a crisp line to follow, protects the finish from the saw and stops the blade skating at the start of the cut.

Mark each leg with a number and note the orientation, since splayed legs are not interchangeable and refitting caps in the wrong place is a small annoyance.

Cutting Cleanly

Turn the stool upside down and clamp the leg you are cutting. Use soft jaws or scraps of timber against the tube to spread the clamping force, since thin wall tube crushes easily and a crushed tube will not accept its floor cap afterwards.

For round tube, a pipe cutter gives the squarest result. Tighten gently, rotate a full turn, tighten a fraction more, and repeat. Forcing a pipe cutter deforms the tube and leaves a heavy internal burr.

For square section or where a pipe cutter will not fit, use a hacksaw with a fine tooth blade of twenty four to thirty two teeth per inch. Start the cut on the far edge with light strokes, then settle into full strokes using the whole blade. Let the saw do the work rather than pressing hard, as pressure causes the blade to wander off the line.

An angle grinder with a thin cutting disc is quicker but far less forgiving, and it will burn the finish either side of the cut. If you use one, mark generously, cut just short of the line and file back to it. Wear eye protection and gloves regardless of the tool.

Keep the cut square to the leg axis rather than parallel to the floor. On splayed legs those are different things, and cutting square to the axis is what keeps the floor cap sitting correctly.

Finishing the Cut Ends

Every cut leaves a burr, inside and out, and both need removing.

File the outer edge with a flat file until it is smooth to the touch, then chamfer it very slightly so the floor cap slides on without tearing.

Deburr the inside with a round file or a rotary deburring tool. An internal burr stops push in caps seating fully, which is what causes them to fall off later.

Touch up the bare metal. On a painted or powder coated leg, a dab of matching enamel or even clear lacquer prevents rust creeping up under the finish. On chrome, the cut end will be hidden by the cap, but a coat of clear lacquer inside the tube end is still worthwhile in a kitchen where floors get mopped.

Refit the original floor caps if they are undamaged, or fit new ones. Push in caps for tube, glide pads for square section. New caps cost very little and they are what protects your floor.

Checking and Correcting

Stand the stool on your flat reference surface and check for rock. Press each corner in turn.

If it rocks, identify the long leg by sliding a thin card under each foot to see which one has no gap. File or take a further fraction off that leg only, then recheck. Work in small increments, since it is easy to chase a rock around all four legs and end up shorter than intended.

Sit on the stool and check it at your worktop. Confirm the two hundred and fifty to three hundred millimetre knee clearance and check the footrest still sits at a useful height, roughly two hundred to two hundred and fifty millimetres below the seat.

Only once the first stool is right should you cut the second, using the finished first stool as your reference.

When Replacement Makes More Sense

Shortening is worthwhile on solid stools that are the right style and simply the wrong height, and it is a genuinely reversible sounding job that takes an hour per stool.
