Most hydraulic bar stool faults come down to one part: the gas lift cylinder. If the seat sinks under weight, will not rise, or drops slowly after you adjust it, the cylinder has lost its gas charge and needs replacing rather than repairing. A seat that holds your weight but refuses to rise when the lever is pulled points to a jammed or misaligned release valve. A seat that stays at the right height but rocks side to side is a fixing problem, not a hydraulic one.
Test it methodically. Lift the release lever with no weight on the seat and see whether it rises. Then sit down and note how quickly it drops. Finally, with the stool empty, grip the seat and try to rock it while watching where the movement originates: the seat plate, the top of the column, or the base.

A gas lift cartridge is a sealed unit. Once the gas has escaped past the seal there is no way to recharge it, so replacement is the only route. Cartridges are inexpensive and widely available, but they come in different diameters and stroke lengths, so measure before ordering.

Turn the stool over and watch the pin as somebody operates the lever. If the pin barely moves, tighten the lever mounting and check for a bent arm. A small adjustment is often enough to restore full travel. On screw type stools, where the seat itself rotates to raise and lower, a seized thread is more likely. Clean the thread with a brush, remove any old grease and reapply a light film of white lithium grease.
If the pin depresses fully and nothing happens, the cylinder has failed internally and should be replaced.
Wobble in a hydraulic stool almost always comes from one of three places. The base socket may have worn where the cylinder sits, allowing the column to move within it. The seat plate screws may have loosened. Or the footring collar may have slipped, which lets the whole column flex under load.
Start with the easiest check and work up. Tighten every visible screw on the seat plate and the base. Then look at the base socket with the cylinder removed. If you can see a bright ring of wear or the socket feels oval rather than round, the base has failed and no amount of tightening will cure it.
A worn base is where repair becomes questionable. Bases are harder to source than cylinders and rarely cheap, so at that point many people move on to a replacement stool. That joint relies on friction, so any lubricant stops it gripping and produces a wobble that no amount of tapping will cure. Tapers should be clean and dry, and if somebody has already greased one, degrease both surfaces before reassembly.
The second mistake is striking one spot on the base repeatedly. It feels efficient and it bends the base or cracks the socket boss, turning a cheap cylinder job into a whole stool replacement. Move around the socket in a circle and let the vibration do the work.
The third is forcing a stool back into service without loading the taper. After reassembly, stand the stool upright and sit on it once with your full weight before anybody uses it normally. While you have the stool apart, check the floor glides on the base. Worn glides let the base sit unevenly, which feels like a mechanical fault but is nothing of the sort. New self adhesive felt pads solve it in a minute.
Sometimes the mechanism is sound and it is the seat that has aged. A tired fabric top on an otherwise solid stool is straightforward to recover. Remove the seat, prise out the staples holding the old cover, use it as a pattern for new material and staple the replacement over the existing foam.
