How Do You Make Dining Table Legs?

You cut a rectangular hole, the mortise, into two adjacent faces at the top of each leg, and a matching projecting tongue, the tenon, on the end of each apron rail. Aim for a tenon around a third of the thickness of the rail, and a mortise depth of around 25mm to 30mm. The fit should be snug enough that the tenon holds by friction before glue goes anywhere near it.

Dowel joints are a simpler alternative. Two or three dowels per joint, drilled with a dowelling jig for alignment, give reasonable strength for a domestic table. They are quicker but have less glue surface than a tenon.

Corner brackets with hanger bolts are the removable option and the one used on most flat pack furniture. A hanger bolt screws into the top of the leg at forty five degrees, then passes through a metal bracket seated in slots cut into the aprons. A wing nut tightens the whole thing. Sand with the grain, never across it, because cross grain scratches show up dramatically once finish goes on.

Do your sanding before assembly. Reaching into the inside corner of an assembled frame with sandpaper is miserable work and you will never get it even.

For finish, hardwax oil is forgiving and repairable, which suits legs that take knocks. Two or three thin coats, each wiped back after around fifteen minutes, gives a natural look.
