Join legs to stretchers with dowels or mortise and tenon joints. Dowels are perfectly adequate for domestic seating and much faster: two 10mm dowels per joint, glued and clamped. Dry fit the whole frame before any glue goes near it.

Glue up in two stages: two opposite leg pairs first, then join those pairs with the remaining stretchers. Trying to glue eight joints at once with wood glue that grabs in ten minutes is the most common point at which these projects go wrong.

Fit the footring last. A round ring can be laminated from bent strips, but a simpler approach is four straight rails forming a square, set 20cm to 25cm below the seat. It performs the same function and requires no steam bending.

Fitting the Swivel Mechanism

The swivel plate has two faces: one screws to the underside of the seat, the other to the top of the frame. Find the centre of both precisely, because a plate that is even 5mm off centre produces a seat that feels like it wanders as it turns.

Mark the seat centre by drawing two lines across the diameter at right angles. Mark the frame centre by measuring diagonally between the leg tops. Drill pilot holes for every screw, since driving screws into hardwood without pilots splits the timber, particularly near an edge.

Fix the plate to the frame first, then offer the seat on top and fix it down. Use screws long enough to bite properly but short enough not to break through a 4cm seat: 25mm is usually right.

Test the rotation before finishing. It should turn smoothly with light hand pressure and stop without wobble. Any grinding usually means a screw head is fouling the plate or the plate is sitting on an uneven surface.

Finishing and Sealing

Sand progressively, 120 grit then 180 then 240. Do not skip grits: it takes longer to remove 120 grit scratches with 240 paper than to do the intermediate step properly.

For kitchen use, a hardwax oil or a polyurethane varnish both work. Oil is easier to repair and feels natural under the hand. Varnish is tougher against spills. Either way, seal all surfaces including the underside and the end grain of the legs, because unsealed end grain sitting on a damp kitchen floor will wick moisture upward.

Apply thin coats and allow full curing between them. Two or three coats on the seat, where wear is heaviest, and two on the frame is a reasonable target.
